Tom Ford’s Spring 2011 runway presentation has finally hit the internet. Watching it is like viewing how a fashion show might be presented in a movie. Everyone is chic, it’s intimate, people are smiling and clapping appreciatively (Beyonce got major cheers) and yes, it feels exclusive. Gotta say, Ford is quite the magic maker when it comes to presentation. And we could make fun of him for all the ways he’s gone back on his promises to avoid the instantaneous nature of the internet, but whatever. Ford quit the women’s game before fashion on line exploded so it’s probably going to take a minute before he figures out how he wants to work it. As it is, this video is going to be on every fashion site known to human kind within the next 48 hours, which isn’t as small a feat as it sounds.
A whole bunch of Spring fashion ads have been uploaded to various sites recently, including this one for Tom Ford’s eyewear campaign, which features model Abbey Lee Kershaw. Ford goes for the bigger-than-life librarian look for this particular pair. They’re super cute, and well set off by the giant crystal necklace, plus a killer red mani that perfectly coordinates with Kershaw’s lipstick. More on the next page, including two men’s styles.
Daughter of Carine, Juilan Restoin Roitfeld, interviewed Tom Ford for V Magazine issue No. 69 and photographed herself wearing four of his dresses. The rest of the looks on the next page.
We posted the cover shot last month, and now Vogue Paris has now made available half a dozen or so pages from the issue on its site. This image features cover 15-year old Dutch model Daphne Groeneveld, styled by Carine Roitfeld and photographed by Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott.
U.S. Vogue landed the first Tom Ford editorial, but Vogue Paris has Ford on its December cover and assisting on editing duties. Here he is with 15-year-old Dutch model Daphne Groeneveld (who some feel for this shoot has been excessively styled to resemble Lara Stone), as photographed by Mert & Marcus.
After dissing the instantaneous nature of internet fashion non-stop, we get the first glimpses of Tom Ford’s much-buzzed about Spring 2011 women’s collection, you guessed it, on Vogue’s website. The funnier still part is that the article spends its first two paragraphs reitering that theme and then revisits it again in a third paragraph! But oh well, Ford is doing his best to create exclusivity and perhaps stumbling a bit along the way (or rather Vogue is not realizing it too has a web presence!). As for the clothes, they’re quite glamorous and true to Ford’s love affair with the ’70s, but it’s tough to get a real feel for the collection from just these shots.
Here by the way is a list of the models who appeared in his show: Lauren Hutton, Liya Kebede, Rinko Kikuchi, Rachel Feinstein, Lisa Eisner, Beyoncé Knowles, Marisa Berenson, Stella Tennant, Amber Valletta, Natalia Vodianova,Karen Elson, Lakshmi Menon, Karlie Kloss, Abbey Lee Kershaw, Rita Wilson and Julianne Moore. We wrote about Tom Ford’s upcoming nailpolish release a while back and now with the official images we see it’s being packaged as a “Black Orchid” gift set with lipstick and a solid perfume. If you know someone who’s a packaging/status fiend then you can knock her off your gift list with this item. Priced at $140, it will sell in the United States at Neiman’s and Saks. Via Refinery. On a nail polish note, while visiting Valley spa a couple weeks back for a manicure with star nail technician, Maki, she revealed that she was part of the team that handled the manicures for Tom Ford’s super-secret ruway show! In keeping with the theme of personalizing the fashion choices to reflect the person wearing the clothes, a different color polish was used with each model. Perhaps a hint that we can expect lots more in the nail polish category from Mr. Ford?
Some headshots from Tom Ford’s super exclusive show have surfaced. There’s been a lot of talk about Tom “dissing the cult of immediacy,” as WWD put it, but the truth is bloggers were invited to the show and it was immediately reviewed and a handful of images immediately leaked out (from the NY Times no less!) and were available on line. I believe in brands protecting their creativity and think images released to the public should be limited or at least capitalized upon like Burberry making the collection available to purchase after its shown. But as far as Tom Ford goes, what if all the hype mainly comes down to him banning profesional photographers and limiting invitees? I mean, until we get a clear vision of the actual rags, we won’t really know will we?
Tom Ford relaunched his name as a woman’s wear designer with a Spring 2011 runway show featuring Beyonce, Julianne Moore, Lauren Hutton, Rita Wilson, Daphne Guinness, Farida Khelfa, as well as models Amber Valletta and Stella Tennant. According to Cathy Horyn of the NY Times, the show was held in Ford’s Madison Avenue men’s store and was limited to about 100 editors, who all must have been in heaven to be transported back to a world before the barbarians, i.e. bloggers, crossed the barriers. No images were released (the one on this page is Beyonce arriving), which in addition to protecting Ford’s ideas, certainly creates mystique, and though none will be released until January, one has to bet they will be leaked here and there as needed to create buzz. One more pic of Solange Knowles, wearing a leopard print turban, after the flip. UPDATE: A blurry image showing the shimmery top-half of Beyonce’s dress added.
