Did you guys see this last week? It came out just before #Sandy hit. Watch if you need some post-storm cheering up because it’s so fun. Lesley Gore, who originally recorded the ’60s hit “You Don’t Own Me,” put together a video featuring the song as lip synched by a bunch of very cool females, including Lena Dunham, Tracee Ellis Ross, Tavi Gevinson and Alexa Chung among many others. Here’s the message according to Gore, who speaks at the end of the video:

Women, let’s rise up. Our vote alone can win this election. A vote for Obama is a vote for your health and your right to choose. It is a vote for equal pay and equal rights. A vote for Obama is a vote for our families. It is a vote to marry who you choose. It’s a vote to start a family when you choose. A vote for Obama says that we won’t stand for violence against women and that rape is rape. Our vote ensures that our daughters will grow up with the same rights that we’ve had. A vote for Obama sends a message: This war on women must end. We will not go backwards.

It’s been announced that Style Rookie founder, Tavi Gevinson, who is repped by big time Hollywood talent agency, UTA, has signed on to act in a movie directed by Nicole Holofcener, whose resume includes directions of episdoes for Parks and Recreation, Six Feet Under, and Sex and the City. According to Hollywoodreporter:

“[Gevinson] will play the role of Chloe, an only child who never received much attention from her parents, forcing her to grow up faster than her peers.”

Which I guess makes Gevinson officially a working teen. Interesting because it’s a move that probably won’t be surrounded by nearly the amount of controversy associated with girls Gevinson’s age who choose to go into modeling. Not sure why that is either, as one could argue the hazards of young Hollywood fame are just as nasty if not worse than those of the fashion world.

Teen sensation Tavi Gevinson is tapped for the cover of Bust magazine’s August 2012 issue. She’s adorable and amazing, all true, but it seems like post-frontrow-runway blow-up in 2009/2010, part of her brand seems to be rooted in saying dissy things about fashion, like for example one of her responses in the Bust editorial accompanying the cover:

“In a way, fashion had been this magical thing that I was obsessed with. I was just such a fan. But then I got a little too close to it, and that was kind of saddening.”

I understand that fashion has its issues (just like any other industry!) and it’s her right to comment on the negatives, but I do feel like the business gave her an opportunity. Which granted, on her own she took her foot out of the door only to smash it wide open, but still, it would be nice to see her show a  little more balance in her comments as it relates to the business.
