Established in 1938, Namibia’s Schier shoes, known locally as “velskoen” or “vellies,” are viewed as the godfather of the desert boot, a silhouette that was originally inspired by the footwear worn by the Khoikhoi tribe. Schier shoes now are manufactured in the coastal town of Swakopmund, Namibia, at the Herbert Schier workshop. There, a small group of eight Damara shoemakers assemble every shoe by hand, making just 20 pairs a day.
