Rachel Roy Interview W Forbes: ‘Give Up Dressing Like Kate Moss’

RachelRoyForbes 495x540 Rachel Roy Interview W Forbes: Give Up Dressing Like Kate Moss

A great interview with Rachel Roy, who has become one to watch in the fashion industry and deserves kudos for the buzz she has built around her name and projects. And did you know she’s six-feet tall?? I didn’t either. Darn woman, no wonder you enjoy rubbing shoulders with Amar’e!

That said the sensational and not-even true headline, “Women Should Give Up Dressing Like Kate Moss,” is bugging me, I guess especially since it’s from Forbes–a “serious” pub. It’s one of those ones that if you’re the writer and you didn’t pen it, you’re kind of fuming. Yes, it’s catchy and will translate to page views, but it conveys the opposite of what Rachel Roy was trying to say in the q&a, which was that women should figure out what works for them and not blindly follow people like Kate Moss just because their fashion choices are high profile.

Here are a couple of excerpts:

Forbes: What are five items you think every woman needs?

RR: Definitely a trench coat. I wear them as dresses, and they instantly make me look thinner, pulled together, sharp. Think Diane Sawyer. A great pair of flats, though I’m not a believer in toe cleavage. A men’s blouse. Like what Sharon Stone wore to the Oscars [in 1999]. I have one from Jones Apparel that I wear all of the time. It doesn’t wrinkle. Buy one in a smaller size than you would normally wear. Cardigans. I button mine all of the way up and wear them backwards channeling Marilyn Monroe in the 1950s, and pair it with a pencil skirt. And a turtleneck, which you can wear year round. Wear it with a strapless dress or a wispy spring dress right now.

Forbes: What are the worst fashion mistakes that women make?

RR: When I was younger, I always wanted to be trendy. I always wanted to have the correct trend that Kate Moss was telling us to wear in a magazine. But if she’s saying skinny pants are in, and I know they are going to make my hips stick out, now I know better than to wear them. Instead I’ll go for high-waisted pants, and channel Katharine Hepburn. It’s all about trend editing yourself.

Wwd reports on the collaboration women’s apparel line between dreamy basketball  player  Amar’e Stoudemire and  designer Rachel Roy:

Sports will play a major role in his collaboration with Roy for fall. Don’t expect the pieces to home in on active garb, though. “I am channeling a girl that goes to sporting events,” said Roy,

The line will launch in September at select Macy’s stores, macys.com and NBA.com, with retail prices from $45 to about $250.

Not that it’s any of our business since the topic is fashion but these too sure make a cute couple, just like the above logo. Check out more images on  the next page.

roy Rachel Roy X Karina Petroni Capsule Surf Footwear

Via WWD: New York-based designer  Rachel Roy has partnered with pro surfer Karina Petroni to roll out a capsule collection of Baja-print footwear for summer 2011. The line is comprised of a sneaker, wedge and flat espadrille detailed in bright, woven fabric.

“Growing up in Monterey, Calif., I was exposed to surf culture every single day, so partnering with Karina, the highest-ranked American East Coast female pro surfer, felt like a good fit,” Roy said, noting the collection blends her urban design sensibility and Petroni’s Panamanian heritage. “We settled on the Baja print [because] it reminds me of the surfers I was around growing up, and for her, it was authentic to the local artisans where she grew up.”

Priced at $50 for the slide, $99 for the high-top sneaker and $139 for the wedge, the collection is expected to sell at select Macy’s locations nationwide.

Petal ring1 Rachel Roy X Estelle Accessory Collection

Rachel Roy and singer Estelle are joining forces on a jewelry collection which Rachel is going to preview as a pop-up store on her Facebook page on February 9th for three days only. The collection includes rings, ear cuffs and necklaces and ranges in price from $34-$50. If you become a fan of Rachel, you’ll have the opportunity to buy the collection on-line, and some items–like the ultra-cool, full-finger petal ring featured above, will only be sold on her site.

(And on a side note, good on Rachel for moving past her high-profile marriage and actually doing the darn thing. I had my doubts about her whole delve into fashion not being very serious, but I’m happy to say she’s proved me wrong, wrong wrong!)

One more image of Rachel and Estelle, wearing a very neat dress after the flip.
