Lena Dunham Q&A With Playboy Magazine

Lena Dunham has an interview with q&a and as usual she’s a joy to read. One of those people for whom an era has been waiting, and we know this because she’s very much truth to power and puts voice and clarity to all of the many thoughts that have been swimming around our heads for too, too long. Needless to say, we appreciate her deeply! Here are some highlights:

I never chalk up anything to the gender divide and say, “Well, that’s just a male thing.” I hate the conventional wisdom that men are supposedly complete pieces of shit and it’s our job as women to put up with them. Men are just as sensitive and easily victimized as women are, but there’s not as much of an infrastructure for expressing it. That drives me nuts. We’re all humans and doing human stuff.

On Girls I like being a mouthpiece for the issues I think young females face today. It’s always shocking when people question whether it’s a feminist show. How could a show about women exploring women not be? Feminism isn’t a dirty word. It’s not like we’re a deranged group who think women should take over the planet, raise our young on our own and eliminate men from the picture. Feminism is about women having all the rights that men have.

While being racist and promoting inequality are crimes that should be punished, the sin of writing two Jewish girl characters and two Waspy characters feels less egregious to me. I’ve tried to be elegant about it and receive the criticism, and I understand what’s hard about it. At the same time I’m like, Really?

Playboy Archive Launch Party

PlayboyArchiveEvent (6)

Playboy recently made all of its archives available electronically and in celebration it invited a bunch of folks to a party at Partners & Spades, a studio in lower Manhattan. The walls were covered with framed posters of centerfolds from days gone by and there were also cases filled with vintage memorabilia, like bunny tails and playing cards. The ladies back then were of course gorgeous and their racks amazing, but clearly beauty standards have evolved, from the bushy, heavily airbrushed (though not photoshopped), and softer looks of yore to current Playmates, who tend to be more toned and waxed (though I do believe we’re post-peak on that trend) and whose breasts are generally bubblier and seem to perch a lot higher on their frames.  Alas, from then ’til now, Playboy shows very little love for ladies of color….though of course there is good and bad to that equation.

See more images on the next page, including Madonna’s cover and Naomi Campbell’s centerfold.

Video: Playboy Bunnies Mars Blackmon Jordan Promo

19 May 2011, 14.17 | Posted in Sneakers | No comments »

Playboy has an upcoming magazine feature whose focus will be the greatest Jordan shoes of all time. The clever twist is that Playboy bunnies will be modeling the shoes. In this promo video, bunny Francesca Frigo plays the part of one of Spike Lee’s greatest creations, Mars Blackmon, who first appeared in his first big film She’s Gotta Have It, and then later as part of a series of Jordan commercials. It’s very cute visually, but oh boy, the acting is over-the-top awful. Via Hypebeast. Styled by our own  Radio Rose, who also styled  Amber Rose in King.
