Last year seemed to be a year when shoe profiles were pushed to the limits of high-art craziness. This year seems to be more about zoning in on classic profiless while upping the ante on the color and materials story. For Spring 2010, U.S.-based Proenza Schouler maximizes the woven leather upper trend with contrasting colors, and, showing absolutely zero fear, throws in a zig-zag pattern on the heel for good measure.

For their second collaborative effort Chloe Sevigny and Opening Ceremony allow us to revisit the wedge heel as well as  sleek versions of  some iconic footwear reminiscent of goth and , grunge like creepers and logger boots.  A closer look at the styles on the next page.

In my eyes Chloe Sevigny can do no wrong. One of my favorite actresses and style inspirations, I find her choices to be really courageous. Her latest collaboration with Opening Ceremony showed at London Fashion week and it’s no exception to Chloe’s eclectic aesthetic. The unisex line has teamed up with Bass to expand the collection from RTW to footwear, now including saddle shoe boots, gladiator style wedge sandals, and loafers.  Expect lots of over-sized pieces good for layering including accessories, such as scarves, that had a large part on the overall look. The use of materials such as moleskin and tweed had a very Sherlock Holmes kind of feel to it. Prices start at just $95 and the collection will be available at Opening Ceremony, Colette, Dover Street Market, and Barneys.

Betsey Johnson, Humberto Leon and Carol Lim of Opening Ceremony will be teaming up to collaborate on the reinvention of 35 of her pieces from her early days. Titled the “Betsey Johnson Archive”, the line will go up for sale come Fall in limited Opening Ceremony shops as well as some of Betsey’s own boutique. I’m guessing the line will have an overall rock and roll feel. Betsey is now known for her over the top, girlie girl cocktail dresses, however she was once a force to be reckoned with on the NYC punk scene and she even designed“punk label” years ago.

I’m really loving where women’s fashion sandals, especially flats, are these days trend-wise. If you think back on the desert were lost in a mere two or three seasons ago when rubber flip-flops dominated and Havainos were a major fashion statement, the choices in comparison now are borderline spectacular, and I have a felling that Spring 2009 promises to be even more creative and fun. While at Magic, I photographed some sandals that I liked. There were so many more that I didn’t get a chance to snap for whatever reason (like the pair of Gucci thongs that didn’t make it ’cause my dumb battery ran out!)

More to the right….

Opening Ceremony launched what I think is the second installment of Chloe Sevigny’s clothing line. The results are very mixed. Some of it is just plain strange–and not artsy-fartsy good strange like that runway show featuring the top with giant, raised “Yes.” What I mean is that parts of the line looked like they were pulled straight out of the back of her closet from when she was feeling the 80s for the first time from a few years back. There’s a handful of things that were decent, but overall, damn girl, we know you can do better!

^^In general these days I like high-waisted, straight-legs and it’s good to see someone making them in a fabric other than denim

^^This uber-coordinated, Laura-Ashley-night-at-the-disco outfit is so silly that I sort of like it. It harkens back to the days when Chloe would wear figure skater body suits to events, which I always appreciated deeply.
