OBEY Clothing has collaborated with documentary photographer Martha Cooper to create a series of product including a skateboard, hat, bag and a range of T-shirts featuring Cooper’s photography.  One of the photographs has been illustrated by Shepard Fairey and will be offered as a poster by www.OBEYGIANT.COM and a T-shirt and skateboard by OBEY Clothing

 In Street Shots, opening January 16th at Subliminal Projects, her photos reveal the imaginative children of pre-renewal New York City as they mined the abandoned lots of the city to create toys from trash. Cooper, renowned for her graffiti and hip-hop pictures, brings those classic images together with ones depicting inner-city kids building forts from scrap, catching flies in cola bottles and racing homemade go-karts—all without adult supervision.

I’m telling you, there are still waaaaay too few streetwear designers addressing the wants and needs list of female customers. The floor of S.LA.T.E. was very much man world. Obey is NOT part of the female-ignoration crowd. For a while now, it’s offered designs for women, and not just in smaller tee-shirt sizes. The brand offers the full gamut and it has a female designer (Argh! I just discovered that I accidentally left all the cards I got in my hotel room so I can’t tell you her name, which sucks!!) dedicated to the task. UPDATE: I just an email from the designer. Her name is Erin Wignall and she is great!

I couldn’t photograph Spring 2009, but I can tell you that Obey did a VERY cool collabo with amazing street photographer Martha Cooper.

When checking out the various and sundry online streetwear retail sites, I keep noticing that every where I go, Obey’s spring/summer line stands out. It’s not shockingly different or better than its direct competitors, but clearly its designs are consistently just a notch above everyone else’s.

A week or so ago, I highlighted the top-selling tees at Karmaloop. This week I checked in with the site’s buyer, Dina, to see what’s up with dresses. It’s kinda fun to see what I might think is happening vs. the reality of the streetwear-buying masses. One thing for sure, young women of the world are feeling very sexy this spring. The five dresses she listed are all short and extremely flirty.

I dropped a line to one of my fave buyers, Dina of Karmaloop, yesterday and asked her what’s hot so far this spring in tops (for women, natch!) and here’s what she reported back:

^^No. 1: Tokidoki Gun blouse: It was completely sold out 10 days after it hit the site.

^^ No 2: Obey Bolts tank. No damn wonder! It’s ridiculously sexy!

^^No 3: M.O.B Money tee. Leah, the number one originator. You know her stuff is gonna be riding high in the mix.
