This past Friday adidas launched the GLC pop-up nail salon in collaboration with Teyana Taylor and a crew of talented nail artists. The opening party featured the Misshapes and the incomparable Chromeo. It was refreshing to see an athletic brand devote an event to nail art and  women even though there were an impressive amount of men in attendance. Check out above a preview of Nailgasm, a documentary directed by Brass that explores the world of nail art. The full version premiered on-line two days ago and according to a description provided on the Nailgasm website:

“What costs as little as 99 cents and is a fanatical obsession shared by pop superstars, celebrities and millions of ordinary women around the globe? Nail Art, the one-time staple of 80’s Hip-Hop B-girls that has suddenly reached mainstream notoriety from your local drugstore to Chanel runways at Fashion Week. Directed by Documentarian, BRASS, the documentary NAILgasm explores how this trend went from being championed by niche communities to the world’s biggest popstars, and its surprising impact on women entrepreneurship.”

Do Rihanna’s Bare Nails Mean Something?

RihannaBareNails 527x540 Do Rihannas Bare Nails Mean Something?

For Halloween Rihanna chose to go with bare nails as shown in the image above. Over at Style (I think it’s Style, can’t find the story anymore, so incredibly maddening–editors you know of what I speak!) there are musings that perhaps this is pointing to the end of the in-your-face nail trend as we know it. The editor infers that Rihanna’s manicure lines up with nail trends shown on runways of late, which are all about bareness.

The thing is, runways beauty trends for a while now have been rather conservative. Whether hair, makeup or nails, designers have chosen to go with relatively staid looks, letting the clothes, shoes and bags make the statement. Most aren’t making a living hawking bags not nail polish after all! As for Rihanna, while her nails are ”natural,” it’s a pretty safe bet they’re fake and just a few days ago she had them painted Vixen red, a perennial fall classic.

That being said, there has been a move away from super complex designs and certainly 3-D nail art is long behind us as a nail trend except for the diehards (and bless their hearts).  Still and all, the nail game is far from dead. More like steady as she goes and if that translate to a breather from every two-bit celebrity and some nail polish company collaborating on a “new” color, no one is going to mind that at all.

Chanel Inspired Nail Art by Kawaii Factory

wendy kawaii 1

As nail art purists we  definitely endorse a  face to face manicure where you get to chat with the artist and see him/her create the magic. Nonetheless when time is an issue or a fierce nail artist on the other side of town , a press on nail is a great option. Recently discovered on Style Pantry, Wendy from Kawaii Factory makes some fun sets like the  Chanel-inspired art (above) with a more unique feel than the sets you can get at a drugstore. Take a closer look a what’s available here.
