We attended the opening of artist Mickalene Thomas at the Lehman Maupin Gallery a few weeks ago. Titled “She’s Come Undone ” The collection of works includes large scale paintings and collages adorned with Thomas’  signature  use of rhinestones , acrylics, bright colors and patterns as well as various installations  highlighting the models used for the pieces . We were totally in awe of her amazing attention to detail, this show is a must see !  A closer look on the next page.

Now that I am done obsessing  about missing Art basel in Miami again .I can share my admiration for one of the women artists whose work I was so looking forward to see.

I discovered Mickalene Thomas last year at an artshow.I was struck by not only her theme that is mainly women .But the overall look of the pieces.Her work has  this nostalgia that reminds me of  the pictures of my stylish  aunts during  the 70’s in Montreal or even Pam Grier.

Mickalene’s  use of rhinestones not only adds another dimension to her work but also makes it  somewhat very fashion focused,which of course I love! The women are always decked out,not afraid of colors and patterns.Always sexy.In the piece above check out the zig zag print skirt,reflected even in the mirror on the right!I’ve dabbled in painting and drawing,that’s not easy to do …
