The very frank editor of Italian Vogue, Franca Sozzani, graces the cover of this month’s Industrie magazine. She’s styled by Katie Grand and photographed by Terry Richardson. Among the Vogue editors you’d have to give her the year in terms of the buzz she created with her Vogue Black and Vogue Curvy blogs, plus her very own blog, which often includes controversial takes on subjects ranging from John Galliano to the NY Times and the Pope.

“Don’t try to be what people want you to be,  it’s the wrong way,” says Franca Sozzani  discussing her latest book I Capricci della Moda,  in which she shares her blog entries from last year, the exchanges she’s had with readers as well as an inside look into what makes Vogue Italia so successful. With sub-sites like “Vogue Curvy” and “Vogue Black,”  Sozanni also shares  that the printed magazine has seen a  20 percent increase in sales. We say take notes U.S. glossies!

Vogue Italia editor, Franca Sozzani, sure knows how to stir the pot. First she creates a special section on her website devoted to black beauty, then “curvy” (can’t stand that term–it’s the ultimate in meaningless descriptions), and now she has a cover featuring three models who are stacked, aka thick*. That this creates a stir in 2011 is somewhat amazing and speaks to the stranglehold that anglo-beauty standards still hold over the industry. We’re glad to see signs that the tide is turning, but damn the pace sometimes feels positively glacial!

*Thick as defined by Urbandictionary: a word used to describe a female who may be defined by health charts as “overweight,” but still attracts mad guys because the weight is in the right places (hips, buttocks, and breasts).
