M.O.B. STILL Rules!

17 August 2009, 18.23 | Posted in Design, Fashion | No comments »

Samia and I finally stopped by M.O.B. headquarters on Friday to say hello to boss lady Leah McSweeney and check out what she has planned for the fall. Can I first just say how happy it makes me to visit her bustling office (with its AMAZING Empire State Building view of southern Manhattan–tho, sob, still miss those Twin Towers….r.i.p.) and realize that the entire joint is headed up by a 26-year old female!! Seriously, that is my idea of nirvana. Especially when you consider that her empire was formed while sitting on a Manhattan stoop, sipping Marqueritas.

As usual, there’s a lot on the table, including M.O.B’s takeover this week of Karmaloop, which will include a 5-year anniversary product launch exclusive to the site, another kicks collabo , plus a party at Magic on August 31st.

Earning Your Badge – Dear Creatures – Fall 09

HighSnobette - Dear Creatures Fall 2009

Dear Creatures has officially earned their fashion badge in our book. The collections get stronger by the season.

Fall 2009 conjures up one of my all-time favorite 80’s movies, Troop Beverly Hills. Crisp khakis and navies, checkered blouses, with red ribbon trimmings, and a green beret here and there to top things off in a darling nod to the all American classic, the Girl Scout.

They’ve got starlet Zooey Deschanel on their side too. Dear Creatures pieces always strike the perfect balance between playful and sophisticated, modern and throwback, work or weekend – all at once, a task worth some serious brownie points.

They’re keeping tight lips on the full line, so stay tuned for more images from the fall collection.

Faryl Robin Fall 2009

miladarkgrey Faryl Robin Fall 2009

It’s going to be interesting to see how all the geometric, high-art shoe designs we’ve been seeing on the runways will be interpreted for those of us who need shoes that we can walk more than 100 yards in. Above we see Faryl Robin serving up her versions with her “Mila” wedge booties for fall. On this grey suede pair, I love the quick hit of flourescence on the heel.

Same shoes in black and brown on the other side.

Oh No! Ye at YSL but Where’s Amber??

10 March 2009, 01.57 | Posted in celebrity | 1 comment »

kanyeyslfront Oh No! Ye at YSL but Wheres Amber??

Kanye was looking quite dapper at YSL, but it appears there was no Amber on his arm! Hopefully this change-in-partner status is temporary because we are so not ready for this female to drop out of the limelight. I mean, cheez, we haven’t even hit the whispered rumors of her seeing-Jay-Z-on-the-low phase yet (tho not for nothing, Yeez, watch yer back cuz you know they’re ALL gonna be coming for her)! Don’t deprive us, Ye!

Meanwhile, the knives are already out at Style:

The cropped-super-short platinum blonde is a puzzle to some–partly because she doesn’t quite share the unerring panache that has made the Louis Vuitton don an industry obsession. While statement-making, her ensembles, e.g., the strange pairing of Current/Elliot denim track shorts with a sports bra and wire-rimmed glasses she was snapped in recently–don’t quite spark sartorial shivers.

Damn!! How frosty was that?? And on that note….

Dear Kanye: If you allow Amber to be turned into a 24/7, honey-colored, buzz blonde version of Posh, I could possible never forgive you.

Late-Breaking Update: According to Jen of BaltimoreRichGirls fame (love that name!), Amber was indeed at the YSL show. In a FashionBombDaily interview with Kanye before the show, you can see her standing next to him.

Undercover Autumn 2009: the Slickness!

undercoverfront Undercover Autumn 2009: the Slickness!

The Undercover show, according to Style, took place on a Mylar blanket runway in a forrest in a Japan. There were just two models and supposedly it was cold as all get out, done to highlight the high-tech nature of Jun Takahashi’s fabric choices. According to the article:

“Takahashi hybridizes biker jackets, puffers, parkas, regular tailoring, and knits to produce lightweight jackets and coats, which are lined with membranes and microcapsules developed for NASA. Some of them absorb body heat indoors and then release it when the wearer steps out into colder conditions. Others will block biting windchill, even though they’re ostensibly as flimsy as blazers.”

Not a lot of new ever happens in fashion so I get all excited when I hear about someone trying to push fabric technology forward, as it is one of the last frontiers. Of course it helps that all his designs are just as slick as his space-age fabrics!

Kid Robot at Magic: Fall 2009

kidrofront Kid Robot at Magic: Fall 2009

Everrrrybody wants to get in the KidRobot booth. There’s something magical about this brand that draws the curious like bees to freshly bloomed flowers. “I just wanna see, I just wanna look,” they all say as they crane their necks to catch a glimpse of what probably looks like a wonderland compared to every other booth in the joint. Kudos to rep Jennifer Getlan who headed them off the pass with great charm and patience, and thanks to her as well for letting us get a peak at the women’s collection, which has taken a step up since its initial launch about a year ago: lots of big graphics and new cuts that set them apart as strictly for the ladies.

Two more tops after the jump.

Diane von Furstenberg Fall 2009

The plaid jackets are perfect

The plaid jackets are FIRE!

Diane is my hero. I realize that’s not a very original thought, but I just wanted to get that out there since I thought her collection was just okay and I love her too much to just flat out diss her and leave it at that. Colors and all that were hot (though that’s like saying it’s warm in the summer because her pallettes never seem to miss), but the best part of the collection were the pants (I want those one in the far right photo above with a sickness!!), but I feel let down ’cause Diane is the one I look for to bring it with dresses. And the dresses were just too boxy and not hot. As a French friend used to say to me with a French accent, “Not sexy….like a dog’s breast.” Oh well, times are tough, not every designer was born to shine when it’s all batton-the-hatches and nose-to-the-grindstone-y.

All images from Style.

More of Diane’s collection after the jump.
