The first week of December sees crowds of art and design enthusiasts flock to Miami for Design Miami and Art Basel. As a lover of all things creative , I ventured  to buzzing South Beach  in a Yukon Denali Hybrid to see what all the hoopla was about. From brands who use the events as a platform to promote to visitors in search of the next hot party and real collectors in search of their next acquisition, the whole thing is a beautiful mashup of many things and people .

There are  always party pictures galore of “who” was there, but very little about the art and design itself  on sites  that mostly feature fashion. And while I’ll never claim to be an art or design critic, enjoying  beauty  should be  accessible to all who appreciate  it, hence our coverage of what we see as a very inspiring gathering of people and culture.

Upon arrival to  Design Miami  I was greeted by an impressive installation by Snarkitecture (above) that gave the feeling of being transported into a very modern outerspace environment. The exhibit itself was a very well curated assortment of design ranging from new and vintage jewellery  to  art installations and of course furniture. On the next page get a little glimpse of what caught my eye.

Belgian designer Maarten de Ceulaer has joined forced with Fendi on a collection of furniture speaking to the Italian brand’s iconic striped motif. The result were a number of furnishings with multi-colored leather planks, wrapped around objects such as benches and tree stumps. The decoration items were exhibited during Design Miami.

Fendi creative director for accessories Silvia Fendi explains:

“These are definitely more functional works than former collaborations. We were lying on his floor bed thinking about how to develop a bag that transforms into seating.”

In my  journey through Miami during Design Miami,  I was pleased to see Delfina Delettrez’s collection of jewellery on display. Blending abstraction and realism each piece displayed behind a magnifying glass required a moment of admiration. See more images on the next page.
