There is no denying that Brooklyn is one of the sexiest boroughs in New York. Manhattan–especially Downtown–has lost most of its edge and spontaneity but, some parts of Brooklyn still have that special off-beat mix of coziness, artistic expression, heritage and multi-culturalism that makes it a favorite of those in the know. Pamela Love recently shared some of her favorite spots in Brooklyn like the Brooklyn Flea on Lafayette with Nylon magazine:
“I spend my summer weekends here. I’ve found so many great pairs of vintage boots and motorcycle jackets. I’m running out of room in my apartment, so I usually only pick up small things, though I did find a great desk there once. The food is really good too.”
Brand new from Greenpoint Brooklyn the fashion label How Very Dare set up the fire and released the lookbook for its wonderful collection for Autumn 2012. The collection ‘Danielle Steals My Heart’ is just as romantic as its name. All pieces feature bold prints of romance novels, horse stampedes and sunset-inspired graphic prints made of finest silk and soft jersey. The collection is now available from Alter Boutique ,140 Franklin St Brooklyn, NY.
When I first moved to NYC and was squished in with multiple roommates, I actually had repeated dreams about finding hidden doors leading to big empty rooms. Something tells me this is not a unique city dream theme. And since we showed the very posh Brooklyn homes being sold by Jenna Lyons and Agyness Deyn, it stands to reason some of our readers might have fun checking out this more size-challenged 12-foot wide Brooklyn brownstone. More in keeping with the average person’s reality but still manages to be just as dreamy as the celebs’ spots.
According to architect Tim Rasic who purchased it in 2005
“It was a full-on interior and exterior renovation. “There had been only two owners before us, each of whom had the house for about fifty years. And they hadn’t done any work in the last fifty.”
Brownstoner has more details on design choices, like choosing not to put cabinets on the walls in the kitchen to make the room seem wider. Interesting how seemingly every choice made is so influenced by the desire to make the space seem larger. Wonder if sometimes they didn’t want to rebel and do something big.
Curbed brings us all the details on J.Crew’s Jenna Lyon’s townhouse sale. It might not normally be much of a big deal but it comes on the tail of the break-up with her husband and hook up with a woman, AND the interior is amazing and beautiful.
One thing you know if you spend any time in Brooklyn is that brownstone or townhouses are very charming, yes, but they’re also narrow to what feels like the extreme by modern-day standards. What’s so awesome about Lyon’s place is what an amazing job she did working around that factor, making it almost a non-issue. For instance check out the bright walls, narrow dining room table and armless chair and sofa, all of which open up the space.
A lot about this photo by city life photographer Chris Arnade, shot on on a Bushwick (neighborhood in Brooklyn) Street this past weekend, epitomizes Summer 2011 in Brooklyn. For, one, the model’s au naturale curly locks–as a fan of fresh new style it’s been so amazing and fun to see the many fly black chicks around this borough letting their hair do its own thing.
And then, too, her sandals. We’ve been talking up the flats trend but its the t-strap she’s sporting in this image that has it all over ever other silhouette. It may just be a Brooklyn thing, but hey, that’s where we live! Spotted at Animalny.
Resurrecting the art of the note card, New York’s own Lady Pym launches a limited edition set of handmade note cards featuring maps of Manhattan and Brooklyn. Totally fitting the category of card that shows a little character (not mass produced looking!) while staying simple and definitely neutral. More options available here.
Ralph Lauren is in a very good place these days and you can feel the confidence oozing in this video ad, featuring looks from Rugby Autumn 2010. Bonus points for filming it in Brooklyn’s Cobble Hill neighborhood, which is populated by folks who are pretty much Ralph’s exact target demographic. As a reference point, the neighborhood got famous for a minute when Heath Ledger and Michelle Willams made house there with their new baby a few years back.
Speaking of sports, it’s February and for Sports Illustrated fans, that means the famous swimsuit issue will soon be hitting stands. Over the past week, S.I. has been leaking out videos and stills, with the lucky cover model to be revealed on Dave Letterman’s show on Feb. 8th. This year, the shoot was stylized to be ’70s and ’80s inspired and “happy and sunny and more subtle” and less “full-on sexy,” according to one of the video narratives. The images, the girls and the suits are always stunningly beautiful, but it does seem that this year’s shoot could be just as at home in Elle as S.I. And take note world! Two of the models, Jessica White (after the flip) and Damaris Lewis (above right), are Brooklyn natives, and there’s a third whose first name is Brooklyn!
The 6th annual Brooklyn Fashion Week[end] took place this past weekend. And though it’s just across the river from Manhattan, there is NO mistaking what comes out of BK for that which is shown in the whiter than white tents of Bryant Park. Basically we bring the sass and the slickness and the booty, yes the booty, in a way that no.other.borough does. Not that I’m not open to the Bronx or even Queens bringing it. That I would not mind seeing. But whatever, I have no fear that BK would remain king of all slickness.
When first I spied Estelle in Kanye’s "American Boy" video, I thought, excellent, here’s a personable, up-and-coming British pop star who’s gonna bring the fashion. But that just didn’t happen. I posted once about her tendency to dress for events like she’s attending church, but bagging on celebs nonstop really isn’t my thing so I just kept it moving when I saw images of her. On that note, I’m happy to report that Estelle actually looked great at a recent concert she did in Brooklyn.
^^Skin is shining, dress is blazing, accessories correct, AND she finally realized the importance of a tight manicure!! Woohoo! Go Estelle! Maybe in Brooklyn she finally got to see what’s good!
