T By Alexander Wang’s Spring 2013 ‘Bon Qui Qui’ Or The Over Use Of Stereotypes

30 January 2013, 14.21 | Posted in Fashion, advertisement | 6 comments »

Alexander Wang launches his T by Alexander Wang Spring 2013 ad featuring Anjelah Johnson as Bon Qui Qui, a stereotype of the city female that I for one have seen a little too much of. The irony is that Bon Qui Qui is often the muse for many trends that have now gone mainstream and are viewed as praiseworthy from hair extensions to nail art, athletic wear, color streaks to name a few. High-end fashion loves to make fun of the world’s Bon Qui Qui, but those of us with eyes and ears on the streets know that in many ways she’s a trendsetter. As much I’ve liked Wang this one makes me pause. (The A$ap Rocky cameo was cute though).

HighSnobette Best Of 2012

QueenoftheJungleMelodyEhsanijpg HighSnobette Best Of 2012

What we have always loved about fashion is it’s potential to bring joy. We as HighSnobette editors feel so lucky to not only have witnessed many of these special moments but to also have come to know and watch grow many of the artists and designers behind some of our favorite projects. Below in no particular order we share what we regard as some of the best, joy-bringing efforts of 2012:

Designer Melody Ehsani’s star has been on the rise for quite some time now, but her “Queen of the Jungle” necklace (above) in many ways stamped her official arrival. We lost count of the stylish celebrities spotted in this vivacious fun piece.

Leah McSweeney has always been a force of personality. She literally is the MTTM brand, as backed by an intensely loyal supporting staff + fan base. Like many young brands the label went through its stumbles when investors pulled out, but the tenacious McSweeney was able to hold on to the name and this year the label found its own inimitable stride again, as marked by the brand’s “Supreme Bitch” snapback cap, which received the blessing of none other mega-style star Rihanna.

See many more “bests” on the next page. And a very Happy New Year to all. Thank you so much for your support in 2012.

ASAP Rocky Cover Of Complex December 2012

ASAPComplexA 540x360 ASAP Rocky Cover Of Complex December 2012

A$AP Rocky grabs the cover of Complex magazine’s December 2012 issue, and chats about the imminent launch of his long-awaited album, Live.Love.A$AP.  The article includes a q&a in which Rocky, aka Rakim Mayers, discusses the changes that have come with fame, including some painful losses (which sorry but he had to be THE only one surprised by betrayal of a crew member! I mean that kind of thing is biblical).

Complex: What’s changed the most in the past year for you? Rocky: I had a lot of close friends stab me in the back for their own greedy desires. I never saw that coming. I never thought my real niggas would be on some fuck shit with me, and do wack shit. I’m a good nigga, and a lot of people fuck with me and then leave with these accusations trying to fuck up what I worked hard for.

He also brings a little fire by stating flat out that Kanye’s fashion is influenced by him.

Complex: Do you think you’re influencing people like Kanye? Rocky: Of course. That’s obvious. [Laughs.] We’re all in the same circle. He’s way richer than me, but of course he’s influenced by me. C’mon, bro. I made waxed denim cool in hip-hop. Fucking waxed denim and rips in jeans. Nobody else did that. I don’t give a fuck. I didn’t know what I was doing. These jeans are Balmain, and I wear them with a Supreme jacket. Of course I’m influencing.

Rihanna ‘Cockiness’ Remix Ft. ASAP Rocky

04 September 2012, 23.54 | Posted in Uncategorized | No comments »

We’re big fans of both Rihanna and ASAP Rocky so it would be almost against HS blog laws for us not to post this remix of “Cockiness”: “Suck my cockiness, lick my pursuasion, eat my poison and swallow my pride……” We’re hearing this song is meant to hint at plans for ASAP to appear with Rihanna during her MTV VMA Awards performance this Thursday. Now that could be worth watching, just to see if ASAP has the fire power to withstand the hurricane force that is Ms. Fenty. You got it in you, Rakim?

ASAP Rocky Chats About Mixing Streetwear & High Fashion

ASAPRocky 540x412 ASAP Rocky Chats About Mixing Streetwear & High Fashion

ASAP Rocky chats with MTVstyle about working with Alexander Wang, styling the video for “Goldie,” and mixing streetwear with high fashion:

“The reason why I like to blend in streetwear with high-end fashion is because I have a sense of both. Most people who are just  into high fashion can’t do streetwear and most streetwear people can’t do high fashion. And I’m not saying all can’t, but most. It’s not like I’m the only person who does it, but I’m known for doing it.”
