PradaShoe 377x540 Prada Flaming Shoe

Combining artistry with graphic appeal, fashion editors’ love affair with Prada’s vintage-auto-inspired shoe continues, from major blog attention when the shoes first appeared on Spring 2012 runways to grabbing full-page spreads in U.S. Elle’s (above) and Vogue’s January issues.

Lana Del Ray On Cover Of Wonderland Magazine

WonderlandLanaDelRay 405x540 Lana Del Ray On Cover Of Wonderland Magazine

Wonderland magazines puts controversial new pop-star Lana Del Ray on its November/December cover. Shot by AJ Numan, she’s wearing jewels by Prada. Not yet aware of Del Ray much less the controversy? It boils down to her lips being fake or not (I’m gonna go to hell for writing this but I actually think they are paid for), which is shallow, yes, but more reflects on the “Manchurian” nature of her rise to fame. Indeed, even the young and hip enjoy a juicy conspiracy or two. You want more, check out Hipsterrunoff for the complete rant.

If you just want to judge for yourself, check out a recent video for “Video Games” on the next page.

Lady Gaga X Mugler Runway Video

30 September 2011, 15.03 | Posted in Music, Runway Show, celebrity | No comments »

Here is the official video from the Mugler runway show, held during Paris Fashion Week a couple days back. It includes the Lady Gaga video that kicked off the show, plus some runway looks.  According to press:

“The collection is about emotion and memory and something forming and abstract rather than complete…We concentrated on the idea of the silhouettes.” said Formichetti of the pieces. Seen in the garments were classic tailoring techniques spliced together or cut-away giving the garments a more abstract quality. The pieces looked like “second skin” some pieces were accented by Swarovski crystals.

The fashion itself showed really great progression from Nicola Formichetti’s first collection for the label, which I would never have thought based on the smattering of dismissive reviews I read after the show. It’s becoming clear that the fashion world for the moment is done with Lady Gaga (and we can’t exclude ourselves from that list of folks feeling fatigued by the constant exposure) and is reacting in borderline hostile ways to her mere presence at any event fashion related so one cannot help but wonder if at this point Mugler isn’t walking a fine line between alienating the fashion press versus gaining “Monster” amounts of publicity because of her large and dedicated fan base (though some of them are worn out by her, too!).

The question is who really is responsible for creating the conventional wisdom when it comes to a label’s collection? Are Prada or say Tory Burch seeing fantastic demand because editors have lately oohed and ahhed over their runway presentations? Perhaps that was the case in the past but it seems nowadays they’re an increasingly smaller and less relevant part of the puzzle and the days of dictation from one small, powerful group are fading quickly behind us. The truth is labels are now going direct to their consumers and what becomes of fashion critics and the good and bad of that formula will be is yet to be known.

MFW: Prada Spring 2012–Flaming Shoes!

22 September 2011, 19.39 | Posted in Uncategorized | 4 comments »

PardaSpring2012 (11)

In the ultimate nod to Americana, Miuccia Prada offers up a Spring 2012 collection that pays tribute to the U.S. big car culture of the ’50s, often considered to be a period that represented the nation at the height of its powers. Prada unlike many other designers, however, manages to pay homage to the period without becoming overly prissy and staid, which she pulls off by infusing designs with her signature touch of sex-kitten mischieviousness, highlighted in this collection by satin car coats and vintage cut bathing suits with sparkle detail. And oh the sandals (above) with the flames shooting out of them!! ….editors are liking to be buzzing about then for days and days to come.

Kreayshawn On Cover Of Complex

20 September 2011, 19.46 | Posted in Magazines, Music, celebrity | 1 comment »

kreayshawn complex 3 540x348 Kreayshawn On Cover Of Complex

Kreayshawn (who we discover in the interview was born Natassia Zolo and whose mom is Russian–ha, shocker…not!)  is having a coming out party via a cover story in Complex magazine’s October/November issue, in a big feature called “About To Blow” that includes a photo shoot and interview. Here’s what the young lass has to say about her sudden stardom and the resulting chatter–much of it very nasty:

“People are so crazy that they’ll make their own fantasy life story of me. People have such passion loving me and such passion hating me, but it’s good to have passion either way. I never looked at myself as a marketable person. I just try to let my personality shine through. Do you think a 16-year-old girl gives a fuck about where I’m from or what I’ve done? No, she loves the songs.”

There’s a lot of interesting content and it’s definitely more revealing than a lot of bios done so far on her (apparently she’s beefing with half a dozen rappers, including Nicki Minaj!). As for what she wears in the shoot, lots of Jeremy Scott for Adidas, American Apparel and Nike, but no sign of Gucci, Gucci, Louis, Louis, Fendi, Fendi, Prada….

See the photo shoot and a video on the next page.

NYFW: Alexander Wang + White Shoes

12 September 2011, 21.32 | Posted in Fashion Week, Shoes | 3 comments »

AlexanderWang-2 (1)

In what is probably his strongest if not most distinctive collection yet, Alexander Wang for Spring 2012 catches print fever (inspired perhaps a bit by Rodarte and Prada Spring 2011?) and adds newness and electricity with activewear-inspired silhouettes–done to perfection because it’s a style aesthetic that has always been a backbeat for the line.

And yet, as strong as the clothes were, the white shoes he showed….just, oh my. And the truth is while it pains me a bit because white shoes have always been my secret, private signature and now they’re exploded all over a major runway for all the copiers to follow, nonetheless, these are a major must-own.

Via V magazine with Sonny Vandevelde behind the lens.
