Cathy Horyn vs. Hedi Slimane: Race To The Bottom

SlimaneLetter 540x361 Cathy Horyn vs. Hedi Slimane: Race To The Bottom

In a nutshell: NY Times fashion critic Cathy Horyn didn’t get invited to the Saint Laurent show held this week during Paris Fashion Week, subsequently she blew up the situation in her column, and then proceeded to blast the collection down to the ground. Apparently there is old beef between Horyn and newly-installed Saint Laurent designer, Hedi Sliman, so the lack of invite was not accidental. Slimane today responded with a Twitter letter (shown above) addressing Horyn. It reads:

Miss Horyn is a schoolyard bully and also a little bit of a stand-up comedian.
Insiders argue she is an average writer, and a bit provincial, but I disagree, she did some great things. Her biggest achievement so far is a book about Bill Blass, that I haven’t read. It might be terrific, and I’ll be happy to recommend it, if it helps the sales.
I also often hear that her sense of style is seriously challenged, providing that she is meant to be an authority in the village. This is totally irrelevant, no one has ever asked for her to be an inspiration to others after all, and likely it would never happen anyway.
Besides, and amusingly, her agenda is seriously thick and perfectly predictable. She is a woman on a mission, and this season she is on fire.
Miss Horyn also works for the New York Times, as everyone knows, where conflicts of interest might seem a little out of place and where being partial, or too friendly with the locals might not be an option.
In conclusion, and as far as I’m concerned, she will never get a seat at Saint Laurent, but might get 2 for 1 at Dior. She should rejoice. I don’t mind critics, but they have to come from a fashion critic, not a publicist in disguise. I am quite mesmerized she did get away with it for so many years.
And by the way come to visit our new website at ysl.com.
Sincerely yours.

And now Horyn has volleyed back, saying, “It’s just silly nonsense.” Well now that’s what you say! On the one hand I’m clapping my hands with glee as I plow through the popcorn, but on the other I’m thinking despite the old adage about any publicity, this is not a good look for either party.

Relating to the name of the new Dior cosmetic line it is no coinisidence that Mrs. Portman appears ‘Nude’ for the Dior Beauty ads. For Natalie it is the first time to be pictured naked. And as her beauty is not enough, the nudity comes with a cause. Among eight new shades, the proceeds from the special hue, Grège #169, goes to Portman’s charity of choice, the Free the Children Association. The photos were taken by Mario Sorrenti.

NataliePortmanWeddingDress 392x540 Natalie Portman Wedding Dress First Blurry Shot

A first shot of Natalie Portman’s wedding dress. (In case you’re way behind, she married dancer Benjamin Millepied this past weekend.) It’s blurry but you get the idea. And gosh she looks happy!

Some are speculating that it’s a Dior dress. [UPDATE: One of our dear commentors informs us that People is saying it's Rodarte.] I somehow doubt that given the statement Portman made about John Galliano pre-dismissal as head designer for Dior not so very long ago. For a refresh, she said:

“I am deeply shocked and disgusted by the video of John Galliano’s comments that surfaced today. In light of this video, and as an individual who is proud to be Jewish, I will not be associated with Mr. Galliano in any way. I hope at the very least, these terrible comments remind us to reflect and act upon combating these still-existing prejudices that are the opposite of all that is beautiful.”

And yes, Galliano is gone, but why would she want to risk in any way referencing that oh-so-very-ugly memory in the form of a gown that will be immortalized in images forever and is supposed to be part and parcel with the happiest day of one’s life. Then again, you never know with the cuckoo Hollywood people so I would only be a little shocked if it were Dior.

We already presented the advertising teaser last week for the Miss Dior handbag featuring Mila Kunis, now a video featuring an interview with wonderful Kunis. The film features the signature black-and-white themes Dior has become know for.

Once again, the film confirms why Mila Kunis is one of the faces I can’t get enough of at the moment. Her naturalness just seems so real behind as well as in front of the camera.

Oh, Mila, we already knew you were gorgeous, but this brand new Miss Dior teaser video leaves us speechless. In a glamour-ridden 1950s Hollywood setting, the elegant, black and white images depict Mila Kunis, and her Miss Dior bag, as the object of affection for adoring fans.

For Kunis, this is her second time fronting the Miss Dior handbag campaign, starting with the Spring 2013 campaign. Images of the ad campaign were published last week followed by the video teaser featured here.  The 28-year-old Kunis was styled by Carine Roitfeld and photographed by Mario Sorrenti in Los Angeles.

Q & A: Street Photographer Rashid Samuel

RasheedSamuel (1)

As big fans of street photography, we were so excited to discover the work of 18-year-old Rashid Samuel, who has been documenting the “mash-up” looks lately sported by New York City’s stylish teen population on his Tumblr, Versus & Co, for the past nine months. Check out our Q&A interview with him below, where he talks about photography and NYC street fashion, and see additional shots of his work after the flip.

HS: When and why did you start taking street photos?

RS: I started off doing videography as a hobby. I video taped events like Sweet 16s, parties and fashion shows.  I started taking pictures, catching people while they’re walking and stopping people last summer. Being out in Manhattan everyone has a different style and I just wanted to catch it. Now I do street photography for enjoyment. I notice there are other people doing it but no one is focusing as much on the 17-21 year-old age group.

Raf Simons To Replace Galliano At Dior

RafSimonsNYT 540x297 Raf Simons To Replace Galliano At Dior

The NY Times has broken the story that Belgian designer Raf Simons (shown above) will replace John Galliano at Dior. According to the Times, talks began in October 2011:

At the time Mr. Simons, 44, was at Jil Sander. But while Mr. Simons is influential, having started the trend for bright colors that has washed over much of the affordable clothing market, and was in discussions in 2010 with the French rival PPR about taking over Yves Saint Laurent, he was not widely seen as a candidate for Dior. His minimalist designs for Jil Sander seemed at odds with Dior’s ultra-femininity. And he is a low-key presence in a business that tends to love Barnum types.

Funny, last week I was chatting with an international investor about LVMH (which owns Dior) dragging its feet on finding a Galliano replacement. He explained that LVMH let’s each house operate fairly independently and the Dior crew is known for being conservative and slow to take action, but he said that recently there had been a push from above for action and the decision would be coming down very soon. And voila, here the moment is upon us.
