Known for their emphasis on quality and craftsmanship inspired by French lace,  Pas de Calais launched their first retail boutique in New York last week.  The retail space located in Manhattan’s Soho neighborhood just like the apparel and accessories offers a sense of ease and tranquility with sophisticated minimalism. First glance at Mellany Sanchez and you may think, okay, bright young woman, tons of potential. After all, she was just tapped by shoe industry hot shot Ronnie Fieg to head up women’s for his recently opened New York store, Kith NYC, starting with a collection of tops and bottoms called White Label for Spring 2013. Spend some time listening to the tale of her come up and you quickly realize she’s already light years past the potential phase. Simply put while most of her classmates were enjoying carefree teen times as high schoolers, she was already chasing down real life opportunities in the fashion industry and juggling not just homework but internships and jobs.

At age 15 she cut her teeth as an intern at Luis Colon’s magazine, Kicks, and all female sneaker store, Laces, and then moved on to jobs and internships at David Z, Rag & Bone, and at J.Crew worked her way up to head merchandiser at the chain’s No.2 Crew Cut store. In addition to Kith, she now handles social media for Oak, and Nike has spotted her, too, recently featuring her in a campaign featuring women’s running gear. We intended to quiz her strictly on the White Label drop, but found her story very easy to listen to. See if you don’t agree:

Q: A few days ago Kith’s White Label dropped its first full launch for men, women and kids. As of now it’s sold to the wall. How long did that take?
Sanchez: It took 90 minutes to sell out. Kith has been making menswear for a while, starting with the Mercer pants. Now it has expanded into women’s and kids. Women were asking for it and Ronnie was listening.

Q: What did the collection include?
Sanchez: The Mercer pants in six colors –black, grey, olive, navy, burgunday and khaki, plus two tops—one all black and the other denim with grey sleeves. The denim is raw Japanese denim with selvidge details.

Q: Ronnie Fieg is a friend to HighSnobette so we know he has a very big personality. How is it working with him?
Sanchez: We both respect each other’s work ethic, and even though we have completely different mind sets we have common goals. We have so many conversations about art and they’re completely different. We’re constantly battling over creative decisions. It’s his company but he appreciates and respects what I like. And I’m confident in what I know, I’m immersed in a lot of worlds, whether it’s discussions about the local bodega to what’s taking place in architecture and the art world.

Gucci has plans to team with Japanese manga artist Hirohiko Araki on a series of illustrations designed for store windows, a campaign that is planned to launch today. Titled “Joylne, Fly High With Gucci,” the illustrations (see two of them above) will tell the tale of a journey taken by character Jolyne Cujoh, whose travels feature fashion and other goods featuring many of Gucci’s rich design themes. In a Black Friday sweep of the Soho retailers on Broadway (yep, there was still H&M x Margiela), last week, it appeared Zara had the strongest floorset, doing a great job especially with tops, like this flannel plaid button up with studs on the pockets. Normally clothing looks better on retailers’ etail sites that it does in real life, but in the case of this item the reverse is true. It’s also available in other colors and while I saw a camo version in the store and online last week when I checked just now it appears it’s no longer there…guess I wasn’t the only one who liked it.

Goodhood remains one of our favorite London based stores offering a nice selection of like minded brands from around the world including YMC, Opening Ceremony, and Sabrina Dehoff amongst many others. The Autumn 2012 lookbook shows some beautiful shots featuring the pieces that are currently available in store. By the way, the retailer recently celebrated it’s fifth-year anniversary and with that event launched its own brand.

Nas and his father, jazz musician Olu Dara, are featured for Gap’s “Love Comes In Every Shade” holiday ad campaign. Most know though this campaign will surely make  many more aware that Nas’s genius as a wordsmith has nature & nurture roots that originate with his pops.

Tsumori Chisato- Pluma sweatpants

As an advocate of style for every occasion seldom do I see features on versatile bum-around apparel. On those laid back days when  the last thing on your mind is trying to  put together a complex outfit it’s good to have  pieces that are unfussy, yet  still have  a cool factor that can also be dressed up. Yes there is room for the decade old phys-ed pants with your high school or college logo but for true women of style there’s always room for a little edge. Hence this feature  focused on the quintessential sweatpants.
