On the red carpet for the CFDA awards, J.Crew’s Jenna Lyons and Solange Knowles continue their cool girl tour, initiated when they shared a table at the Met Gala Ball a couple weeks back.
The big winners of the night, landing the Womenswear Designer of the Year Award, were Ashley Olsen & Mary-Kate Olsen for their label The Row.
The most adored women in fashion, J.Crew big boss, Jenna Lyons, explains on the J.Crew blog her Met Ball outfit–a bright pink skirt and denim jacket–which was viewed by the blogosphere as a little controversial because of the jacket. (Anyone other than Lyons and it would have been viewed as a LOT controversial…just saying.) Btw, that guy with her above is head women’s designer Tom Mora, who wore J.Crew’s Ludlow tuxedo. Here’s what she says about the skirt:
“I felt I had to do something in shocking pink because that’s what Schiaparelli is known for. I sketched the design for this skirt on the back of a piece of paper during a meeting one day about two weeks before the ball. Honda, our patternmaker, draped and stitched the satin right here in the office.”
The jacket:
“I didn’t want to wear duchesse silk satin with something sparkly or pearls. I am who I am—so I took it down a notch with denim. We pulled a J.Crew jean jacket and then had it fit and re-tailored to raise the waistband. I’m also not really wearing a shirt underneath—the collar and cuffs were custom-made by my custom shirtmaker and were stitched into the jacket.”
And even her bag and its contents:
“I carried a J.Crew clutch (the contents of which included reading glasses, phone, keys, $20, license and credit card—and a tube of Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar).”
The aspect of the collar and cuffs custom stitched into the jacket is what slays me. That’s where the jean jacket goes up a level from normal folks. Hardly an original thought, but..luv her.

Just a few more Met Gala looks that caught our eye. That’s Zac Posen and Amber Heard above looking oh-so-chic. The one wonderful thing about this event was there was appealing fashion for everyone. It was interesting to read different sites and see dresses I adored skewered, while looks I found to be ho-hum celebrated to the high heavens. Unlike the usual celebrity red carpets no one was complaining about boring sameness and an overload of fancy-looking prom dresses. It really is of sorts the Oscars of fashion, but unlike the Hollywood version, the real show begins and ends with the red carpet.

A view from the back of Rihanna’s Tom Ford dress, worn to the Met Gala last night. I want to say this is the first time she’s ever been dressed by him. Am I right or wrong, fashion fanatics?

As we mentioned in the last post on the Golden Globe Awards, there is much more to be found when focusing on the closeups rather than just the wide angle dress shot. Last post we looked at accessories, and in this post we look at hair and makeup. The reoccuring theme this year was soft updos, subdued shades of lipstick, upper-lid eyeliner with eyebrows often the biggest statement maker on the face. Earrings were usually lightweight and small and necklaces were often absent altogether.
On this page we featured Evan Rachel Wood who we think epitomized this year’s biggest makeup trends, working a look that was simplistically stunning. See Angelina Jolie, Heidi Klum, Charlize Theron, Debra Messing, Dianna Agron, Helen Mirren, Kelly Osbourne, Mila Kunis, Paula Patten, Madonna, Rooney Mara and many more on the next page.
