In what we consider to be her most provocative collection yet, Kali Arulpragasam exposes murder in her latest designs of Super Fertile. Graphic, thought provoking and definitely controversial. While we admire the boldnesss and talent, we also were put in a place to pause and reflect on what she chooses to tell us:
A range of beautiful and breathtaking pieces in rubies, sapphires, and garnets, carefully selected to resemble bullet wounds, cuts, machine gun fire to the body, slashes, butchering and hacking of the throat, head and ears to portray the inhumanity around the world.
Emotionally charged jewellery like we’ve never seen. Take a deep breath and click to the next page for a closer look at Super Fertile’s Murder Autumn/Winter 2011 jewellery collection. Images courtesy of Super Fertile.
There are times when scientists create objects that are harmful or just create other problems. On the bright side, there are times when you want to take those creative minds and give them a big ole hug to say thank you. Azusa Murakami and Alexander Groves (bless ther hearts) created the “Hair” sunglasses made of human hair and bio resin and are 100 percent biodegradable. Spotted them at Ecouterre. More styles on the next page.
Christian Louboutin created the 8-inch, Swarkovsky-detailed heels featured above as an item to be featured in an upcoming auction to benefit the English National Ballet. Not meant to be walked in, clearly they’re inspired by an extreme silhouette that would be viewed as commonplace in the world of s&m. And in this case, it makes sense given ballet’s own dependence on foot maneuvers that are inherently tortuous to the foot.
Often described for what it lacks Haïti is a place where creativity has always been alive and well. It flourishes and grows even in the rubble. The above film made in collaboration with Donna Karan and David Belle gives a glimpse of a people who work with their hands, heart and soul. While we’re puzzled with the choice of Senegalese Youssou N’dour (who we love) for the soundtrack (not Haitian music?), we hope you are able to enjoy and be inspired!
We greatly appreciate the multiple-wearing options Sseko Sandals provide, but mostly the fact that the company empowers women in Uganda to further their education is what we applaud. Humanitarian aid while it often focuses on giving is even more effective in the long term when it empowers the locals with infrastructures and skills to survive and thrive. It reminds of the Chinese saying: “Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will eat for the rest of his life.” Read more about the Sseko program here. On the next page a closer look at the sandals . Fashion that does good and looks good, we just adore!
To celebrate the freedom we have to love and unite regardless of the color of one’s skin, thanks to Loving vs Virginia Ken& Dana design are giving a way a set of their Loving Day bands in honor of the June 12, Loving Day celebration. When I first saw this tee I couldn’t help but think, but it would be so much cooler if it were Mothra and Godzilla holding hands, but then I realized this was a tee designed by N.Y.-based Milk on the Rocks as a fundraiser for Japan….and thus, a U.S. beast extending a hand to a Japanese monster makes total sense. The one catch is that this is a kid’s tee, but some of them come in fairly large sizes and there is a tank top version for the ladies. (And if you go to the site try and also check out the mini-sized harem pants—cuuuuute!)

Madonna has contributed a pair of black and white Chanel boots (preworn and autographed) for a fundraising auction being held at her daughter Lourdes’ school, LaGuardia High School, a public high school located in New York City’s Upper West Side. This school is often referrred to as “The Fame School,” for the movie which was inspired by it. More recently, Alicia Keys [UPDATE: Keys attended Professional Performing Arts School not LaGuardia] and Nick Minaj are a couple of its more famous attendees and there are many, many more.
Not sure what program Lourdes is a part of, but whatever it is, she had to try out for her spot. Laguardia is one of a handful of highly-ranked New York City public high schools for which you have to meet very high test-in or try-out entry standards to be admitted. As for what those boots may bring to the school, the highest bid at the moment is $2,860, with three days left.
