As an inspiration to living sustainably with style, Nau invited us to partake in a day of apple picking at eco-conscious Fishskill Farm in upstate New Nork. A perfect fall escape from the City, the farm is headed by a young lad named Josh Morgenthaus, whose family has farmed the land since 1913. Aside from getting schooled on what it takes to cultivate apples, the various weather induced  hurdles to jump though, we also had an opportunity to get better acquainted with outdoor brand Nau whose commitment to sustainable style  and community building is to us above average .

Michelle Obama flashed her famously toned arms in a shimmery pink Tracey Reese dress she wore for her very well received Democratic National Convention speech last night in Charlotte, North Carolina. On the way to a party last night for designer Leah McSweeney and writer Cat Marnell (happy birthday to both of you!), my co-editor, SGP, speculated the dress might be J.Crew. She wasn’t far off, Obama’s pumps were J.Crew pink “Everly” pumps, available now for $245. (You know Jenna Lyons & co. are high-fiving their asses off this morning!) The fashion conscious Obama also gave a nod to the nail art trend wearing a grey shade of purple.

What started as surfers  Paul Goodman and Griffin Thall’s quest to help a community has become a contry wide movement. Fashion and luxury can be great tools to raise capital for social/humanitarian causes, however, oftentimes in an effort to appeal to sensitivity  and compassion,  the images used have no connection to the actual items but everything to do with the cause they ‘re supporting. It’s like seeing a save the shildren, or prevent animal abuse  commercial that just happens to play right after a religious program.

One can say that showing the raw living conditions of an  impoverished country brings reality and hopefully compassion to the viewer and prospective consumer, but what also happens is that  these images  also  can create a sense of guilt,  an uneasiness that can propel action but also limit the interaction of the consumer with the offered product.

As controversial as this might sound while I believe in the goodness of humankind, not every consumer will be touched by every cause, or need be presented with the graphic images associated with the cause.  Luxury is about status, indulgence and also craftsmanship . The emotions connected to  luxurious beautiful items can be revisited over and over again, hence my appreciation for Vhernier’s “Haiti” Ring, whose sleekness of design and presentation is a great example of fashion and luxury with a social component that is implied but not forced. The consumer is seduced by the beauty of item and sometimes that is enough. Natural hair in the case of women of African descent when it’s not chemically straightened  comes in all varieties of curl patterns, textures ect. And depending on where you are in the world,  you either grew up loving it not thinking much about it or, maybe you experienced the need to wear it straight. We’re not getting into the debate of straight versus natural because that is an individual choice. What we do have to highlight is that there was a time not too long ago where very few , if any women of color were seen in the spotlight rocking their natural  curly/kinky hair.

While we love the sight of Solange Knowles, Esperanza Spalding, Macy Gray to name a few , think of how many times you’ve seen a big afro, in a courtroom, on a high level executive board or on a fortune 500 CEO? All this means is that minds have to get open a lot more for these occurrences to be commonplace and, mostly there cannot be debates on  texture decorum .Who made us judges of what another woman’s hair texture should look like? Move forward and style your fabulous hair  the way you want. #enough.
