V Magazine Gaga Memo 7: Manicures

V79LadyGagaMemoNo4 540x532 V Magazine Gaga Memo 7: Manicures

After a quiet period for better or worse Lady Gaga is back on the scene, in this case writing her memos once again for V Magazine. This time she pontificates on the importance of manicures. Here are her six reasons for nail grooming (her caps, not mine):

SIX REASONS YOU SHOULD DO THIS:
1 HAVING A PERFECT MANICURE INSTANTLY MAKES YOU FEEL BEAUTIFUL AND CLEAN.
2 YOU’LL BE READY FOR SEX OR TO PUT A PENIS IN YOUR HAND.
3 IT’S A WAY FOR YOU TO EXPRESS YOURSELF (CAREFUL HOW YOU DO THAT).
4 IT FORCES YOU TO SEE THE IMPORTANCE OF MAKING TIME FOR YOURSELF.
5 IT BOOSTS YOUR SELF-ESTEEM EVERYDAY.
6 IT PROJECTS AN IMAGE OF SUCCESS, WHICH IS GOOD FOR BIZ.

Given her points no doubt Gaga is hoping to generate some conversation, but honestly I just cannot. To see a full-sized version of the image above click here.

Kim Kardashian For New York Mag Fashion Issue

13 August 2012, 14.23 | Posted in celebrity | No comments »

KimK2 540x360 Kim Kardashian For New York Mag Fashion Issue

In a nicely-written cover story titled “What Will The Fashion World Do With Kim Kardashian,” for New Yorkmagazine’s “Fashion Issue,” the author examines the exclusionary nature of the fashion world and the dilemma that Kardashian presents. Here’s a snippet:

While the attacks [on Kardashian] may derive partly from a good-faith aesthetic response to some of the clothing she wears, at least as much of it seems to stem from an aversion to non-eating-disorder body types and a broader snobbery and classicism. Fashion likes to celebrate and appropriate street culture and even trash culture, except when it doesn’t.

Every club does some gate keeping so it’s not surprising that fashion has some rules around who its snobbiest members (see Anna Wintour and her enforcer Andre Leon Talley) will and will not allow as members. The article mentions that the Olsen Twins have been embraced by fashion but in their early days they were not. Neither was the now highly-celebrated Victoria Beckham. For the record, us Snobettes enjoy the heck out of both Kardashian and her man.

Kardashian will eventually make her way in if she sticks to it and becomes less popular to the masses, not to mention ends her partnership with Sears, only the unhippest retailer on the planet. It also probably depends on what happens with her and Kanye. If they wed, have children and thus Kardashian becomes a proper “lady” then no doubt the six-page Vogue spread with her two gorgeous children shown around her posh mansion will follow.

Agyness Deyn Dr.Martens Agyness Deyn x Dr. Martens Loobook Autumn 2012

We showed a video preview of  British model Agyness Deyn’s collaboration with brand Dr. Martens last week, and now we have the lookbook.  The 90s-inspired collection is right in step with the punker aesthetic Dr. Marten is best known for and also of course Agyness herself, who is a longtime fan of the brand. On the collection she says:

“I have always had a really intense relationship with Dr. Martens, right from my first pair back when I was 13, which I bought as a combination of showing that I wanted to rebel against my parents and they were the coolest boots that I could get away with wearing to school which stood for something that gave me my own stamp of originality.”

The collection will be available online and in stores at Dr. Marten’s starting August 15th.

See more from the collection after the jump.

Video: Oprah ‘How Rihanna Surprised Me’ Sneak Peek

10 August 2012, 14.14 | Posted in celebrity, interviews | No comments »

Only Oprah (who I think is awesome so don’t get mad) could just now be discovering that Rihanna is not the one-dimensional person she present in her songs and video. View above a sneak peek of her upcoming “Next Chapter” interview with Rihanna, recently conducted in Barbados. Oprah narrates the preview and here is what she had to say:

“So I just came back from Barbados with Rihanna. I went there with my own ideas about who she was, watching the videos and listening to the music. I thought she was going to be kind of a bad-ass, kind of a hard-edged rocker, pop woman. Nothing could have been farther from the truth. This is who she was for me and our cameras and wanted to present herself. She was thoughtful. She was very emotional. She was vulnerable. She pushes the edge. She pushes the edge a lot and there’s a reason for that.

“And I came away really getting a great sense of who she was after we got in her car and drove back to her old neighborhood. First of all I was surprised she was such a good driver. And this is how you know who somebody is: how people react to them. And when we went back to the neighborhood, this reaction surprised me. Because it wasn’t like a big superstar, mega-star, popstar had arrived in the neighborhood. It was just ‘Robyn’ as though she’d gone to the grocery store and came back. It was great. It was great to see. I hope you’ll join me for a really, really get down conversation with Rihanna, August 19th. It’s good.”

Somehow I don’t think there will be anything incredibly new revealed, but Rihanna gives great interiews and paired with the queen of all q&a, the event is a must see for fans.

Alexa Maje 1 Alexa Chung For Maje Autumn 2012

After The Kooples yesterday, today I’d like to introduce another French label which has its roots in Paris. After several collaborations with f.e. Les Putafranges for colette and Francoise Hardy, in Europe Maje is already known for it’s clean feminine silhouettes that exude glamour with edge. For the Autumn 2012 collection the brand tapped the wonderful Alexa Chung, who is a big fan of the brand and, aptly represents the 60s-inspired look and femininity of the campaign. Photographed by Glen Luchford we see Chung in the Parisian Metro, maintaining the lightly, dreamy look that makes her a muse magnifique.

Lady Gaga Covers US Vogue September 2012

09 August 2012, 14.22 | Posted in Magazines, celebrity | No comments »

LadyGagaVogue09-12

While some of us thought that the hype around Lady Gaga and her over-the-top performances had died down, the latest news at least throws darts at that assumption, with the fashion chameleon having just landed the cover of U.S. Vogue’s important September issue, one which also celebrates its 120th anniversary. Photographed by Mert Alas and Marcus Pigott, the cover displays Gaga with a majorly teased-out, blonde ‘fro, wearing a mermaid-style Marc Jacobs gown.

The cover was revealed last night by Gaga on her Twitter account, after a series of Tweets directed at Anna Wintour, nudging the editor for the image. Or so the story goes.

Would love to get your thoughts on her two cover shoots for Vogue. See a second one on the next page.

Gwen Stefani By Terry Richardson For Bazaar September 2012

GwenStefaniBazaar 434x540 Gwen Stefani By Terry Richardson For Bazaar September 2012

Gwen Stefani is shot by Terry Richardson for Bazaar’s biggest September issue yet, with 375 ad pages (which, given the mag’s flat circulation numbers defies logic but ok that’s the state of the ad industry for ya). In this shot she’s wearing a gown by Jil Sander and a hat by Alexis Mabille Couture. We view Stefani as a great, great person, but eh, are not so crazy about this very pink cover. Are you?

Rihanna Dropped By Nivea

RihannaNivea 395x540 Rihanna Dropped By Nivea

In a deal that included ads (like the one above) and tour sponsorhsip, Rihanna has been dropped by Nivea in a very public way, it has been revealed today. Stefan Heidenreich, new head of Nivea’s parent company, Beirsdorf, told German media it wouldn’t re-sign her because she never should have been brought on in the first place.

The advert starring Rihanna was a no go. I do not understand how Nivea can be brought into association with Rihanna. Nivea is a company which stands for trust, family and reliability.”

What a douchey thing to put out to the press. Yes, there is room for something being lost in translation (if indeed this is even a translation) but implying that Rihanna doesn’t care for her family and isn’t trustworthy or reliable is an over-the-top statement for a multi-national company to make, especially for one that makes a fortune hawking utterly b.s. snake oil items like cellulite cream.

This is also a company that had to apologize for its clueless “Recivilize Yourself” ad this time last year, so you’d think the higher-ups had learned a lesson when it comes to making degrading comments about people of color, but nope, apparently some ignorance runs deep.
