Never one to make moves cautiously, Pharrell Williams donned a custom Moncler Gamme Bleu camouflage tux to attend an Art Basel event where he spoke about his new book, Places And Spaces I’ve Been. During the q&a, Kanye popped up and surprised with a final question asking Williams how he developed such a high taste level.

M.I.A. one of the noteworthy talents of our era launches a book simply titled M.I.A. documenting her creative life ,  through art and various sources of inspiration:

A documentation of her entire visual output and a telling of her story in collages, photos, and prints from her early years in art school at Central Saint Martins London through to her hugely successful three albums, mixtapes, and live performances at PS1 MoMA, Coachella, various exhibitions, installations, and music video shoots. The artwork is comprised of a wide variety of materials and media: video stills turned to stencils pieced back together to make animated installations; spray-painted canvasses scanned then made into digital collages; photographs videotaped, then run through bad computer connections to create graphic prints; artwork on nails, walls, prints for T-shirts, handmade stage costumes—anything she could find while she was touring. Also included are assorted lyrics and portions of an exclusive interview in which she discusses candidly the personal events and themes which informed her art and music at the time of each campaign. Includes foreword by Steve Loveridge, friend since her art school days and frequent creative collaborator with M.I.A.

Comics used as an art form to express retro looks with ironic humor is a common practice, and of course the  fashion industry is in on the trend. Phillip Lim has now thrown his hat in the ring by showing his Autumn 2012 collection as drawn by John Ostrander and Star Wars artist Jan Duursema in a book called “Kill The Night.” The comic displays the collection with neo-noir heroines who became the natural medium to tell a story.

“A story of duality and metamorphosis, day and night, black and white, love and betrayal. Things are not what they seem. Look again.”

Along a huge Facebook and Twitter campaign the designer eventually will reveal who the characters are really based off of. The comic book is set to launch on Fashion’s Night Out on September 6th and will be available from 3.1. Phillip Lim’s website and in-store during FNO.

For W magazine’s 40th anniversary, it is offering a book titled W: The First 40 Years, featuring the most iconic features from the last four decades. Edited by Christopher Bagley, the book will be divided into three sections: “Who,” “Where” and “Wow.” Not limited to fashion, topics will include culture, art, design, style, beauty, celebrities  and  high society. With additional interviews,  and essays from writers Lynn Hirschberg, Marian McEvoy, and Vince Aletti, this publication promises to be a treasure trove of  a unique blend of unparalleled access. Set for a November 1st launch date, it is now available for pre-order at Barnes and Noble.

I  have a Kate Moss book, it’s softcover and was purchased at a Brooklyn stoop sale for a few dollars many years ago. It’s called Kate: The Kate Moss Book (which now I’m seeing on Amazon has some decent worth!), but now there is a new and different one, called The Kate Moss Book, published by Rizzoli and available for pre-order for $52.47 on Amazon.

It’s basically a book of Kate Moss photos, and is offered with eight different covers, shot by Mario Testino, Corinne Day, Inez & Vinoodh, Craig McDean, Mert & Marcus, David Sims, Mario Sorrenti, and Juergen Teller. FYI: they will be shipped at random–no picking allowed!  See the other seven covers on the next page.

P.S. Now that I’ve pulled my Kate Moss book out, I’m reminded it  includes a forward written by Moss in 1995, in which she writes about being labeled “viciously by the majority of the media.” She ends by saying she’s off to “eat a massive steak and loads of very fattening potatoes, with loads of butter.” All of which of course refer to the insane beating she took as the face of “Heroin Chic.” Her ability to come out of that pile on says a lot about her survival skills, which in part must have contributed to the unusually long length of her career.

In November, Rizzoli will publish a coffee-table book chronicling Kate Moss’s 20-year modeling career. Kate: The Kate Moss Book, was edited by Jefferson Hack, the father of Moss’s daughter Lila, and legendary casting director and editor-in-chief of Dazed and Another magazine, Jess Hallett. The book will illustrate Kate’s career from little girl to supermodel with photos taken by Juergen Teller, Hedi Slimane, Terry Richardson and Mario Testino just to name a few. The book is expected to be in stores on November 6 and can be pre-ordered from Amazon. Via Selectism

Devoted to the artistry of scent making  Frédéric Malle discussed his book at an intimate gathering at  the  Frédéric Malle boutique on Madison avenue eralier this week.  We had an opportunity to hear his thoughts on fragrance  as an ar, t his belief that choosing a fragrance is a process that requires time,  and that while some scents can be preferred by men or women he’s not attached to the concept of a specific scent  for specific gender. . On hand were some of our favorites like Maurice roucel’s ‘ Musc Ravageur’ ,  Ralf Schwieger’s ‘ Lipstick rose” ,  Pierre Bourbon’s’ Iris Poudre’ among many others. As well as a complete assortment of body products and candles. Setup like a cozy living room the store’s entrance is as discrete as its interior. We talked about the upcoming launch a few months back of French artist Fafi’s illustrated book, The Carmine Vault, and now it appears the big day has arrived. Mademoiselle Fafi will celebrate the launch dat at Gallery Nucleus in Alahambra, California, on April 16th. The event will include a mini-exhibit of her work and guests may win signed copies of the book plus receive a Fafi-designed tote bag. Via Hypebeast.
