India Hindu Festival

Hindu Indians last week observed Navrati, a nine-night Hindu festival dedicated to celebrating Shakti, the feminine form of the divine. According to Huffpost where I gathered my info:

Navratri is celebrated all over India and among the Hindu diaspora with great fanfare. Prior to the festival, skilled artisans prepare clay models of the goddess in her various manifestations. Many Hindus take part in special ceremonies, rituals, fasts and festivities.

Cultural lesson aside, like many events that celebrate our spiritual roots the pageantry was a glory to behold, as you can see from the image above. There’s one more after the flip but there are lots more on various news sites around the web, including at the Huff link provided above.

Tattoo lovers and Sailor Jerry fans braved the rain to get their own  anchor tattoos(an anchor is a  heraldic symbol of hope) then made their way to Matchless Bar for some Sailor Jerry Rhum. More pictures at Driven by Boredom.

While we love the picture and consider ourselves  in appreciation of Ms. Badu’s irreverent style, the henna design on her leg is really a highlight. Living in a little Pakistan enclave in Brooklyn, we’ve been blessed to be able to rock some pretty fierce  Mehndi designs. Check out Erykah Badu’s  video interview on the flip, a close-up of the leg design and the full interview here.
