First Look: Gap Woman Spring/Summer 2012

P5221805 540x540 First Look: Gap Woman Spring/Summer 2012

When thinking of the Gap, I wonder if the brand should serve as a cautionary tale for what can happen when you don’t stay true to yourself or if its struggle is just a sign of the times. From logo changes to high-end designer collaborations, the once quintessential icon of basics, (remember Gap Kahakis?) chased too many trends, left the space wide open for the more clever like J.Crew, Uniqlo to take on a starved men’s market,  refresh the wardrobe of the professional woman and provide the youth with a  fresh practical apparel concept. It could be easy to blame fast fashion but we all know that there is still room for great quality apparel with style. On that note take a look at a few favorites from the Gap women’s Summer collection for 2012, now available  and tell us if you think they are on the right track?

Uniqlo NYC Ad Campaign To Feature Susan Sarandon

SusanSarandonUniqlo Uniqlo NYC Ad Campaign To Feature Susan Sarandon

Uniqlo is about to launch a New York City-themed ad campaign that will feature a bunch of famous New Yorkers, including the ageless Susan Sarandon. (We saw her not too long ago at an event she hosted and yes, even in the flesh sans good lighting and makeup, the woman is positively luminescent.) The ad spots will also include Laura Linney, John Leguizamo, Glee’s Darren Criss, jazz musician Esperanza Spalding and Tumblr founder David Karp among others.

In a WWD article Sarandon says nice things about Uniqlo, natch, but goes on to express more opinion-based things on her feelings on the fashion industry, in particular how the industry relates to her oft-celebrated rack:

“I like to have fun dressing up. I hold onto things. All my Azzedine Alaïa from years ago I still have. Donna Karan and Diane von Furstenberg are old, old friends. Dolce & Gabbana have always been very generous and they have those great Fifties silhouettes that are great if you have breasts. Donna always designs for women with curves in mind. Sometimes designers don’t take breasts into account and there’s no room for them.”

On a side note, this David Karp Tumblr founder…did you know who he is or what he looks like? I didn’t. So I grabbed an image from Google and put it on the next page in case you’re curious, too. He looks like he’s maybe 17 though apparently he’s 26. And he has a Tumblr page, which is kinda good. Imagine that! And oh look, he even has a teaser from Uniqlo’s (I presume) holiday ad campaign.

Uniqlo +J Spring/Summer 2011 Collection

Uniqlo (5)

We have our hands on images from Uniqlo’s + J  Spring/Summer 2011 collection, which will be in stores January 25th. The clear leaders of the offerings are outerwear with some very smart trenches (though you will pay a price, the one shown above is $229), as well as super trend-right parkas perfect for the transition from winter to spring. After that it’s very much hit or miss. Uniqlo has made it’s name on basics, but at least at the SoHo store, it seems lately the women’s side is missing the mark and the offerings shown here don’t seem to be pointing in directions otherwise.  Decide for yourself and view the entire collection on the next page.

highsnobette wgsn fashion 540x452 WGSNs First Global Fashion Awards Ceremony

WGSN hosted the first annual global fashion awards last night at the Waldorf Astoria in New York. Thanks to our fashion fairies, we had the opportunity to attend the lavish fashion event.  The  big media buzz was of course  Alber Elbaz winning the ”Most Influential Womenswear Designer” award (Can’t believe Alex Wang did not?). While the highlight of the night for us  had to be  seeing Iris Apfel receiving the “Global Fashion Icon” award sporting a huge peacock pin,  feathers and lots of bangles.  Another wow moment was meeting Nicholas Kirkwood who won “Most Influential Footwear Designer.” We tweeted some  the winners live, but  on the next page you’ll get a glance into what we saw and the complete list.

UniqloAgy2 Uniqlo X Agyness & Emily Deyn

Model Agyness Deyn and her hermana, Emily, have collaborated on a line of tees with Uniqlo as part of its ongoing UT Project (a series of limited edition tees designed in partnership with various and sundry cool folks). And while a tee-shirt collabo isn’t exactly exciting stuff, the cut and added details on these tops are actually pretty cute. And by the way, those of you who are wondering about Aggy’s little sister, she is 22, lives in New York and has a design company called HusseinDeyn.

uniqlo21 540x321 Jil Sander x Uniqlo Woman, First Look

Every time , I think of what I did with my very cool Jil Sander army green blazer , I get chocked up… But I’m letting go,  after all it’s just clothes right? The sight of the pieces she created for Uniqlo  at  first glance, hint to her mastery of a tailoring and minimalism  that is never boxy, always figure flattering. As simple as her silhouettes can be the magic of her apparel happens when you put it on, and you notice that your clothes fit like they were made just for you . A closer look at pieces from Heidis Marie Jilline Sander for Uniqlo or +J the next page.Via Style.
