Video: Pirelli Calender Shoot Behind The Scenes

YouTube Preview Image

With the presentation of the Pirelli Calendar 2013 in Rio de Janeiro, an accompanying video that documents the shoot was also released. The video is not just a simple behind-the-scenes video but more a documentation of the city, it’s beauty, and social life.

When asked about his direction, Steve McCurry stated:

“I tried to portray Brazil, its landscape, its economy and its culture, along with the human element. This was the story I wanted to tell through my lens. For me photography is an important expressive means to tell large and small stories of daily life.”

With the first images we shared from the shoot we got an insight to McCurry’s intention to show the models and actresses depicting bits and pieces of daily life in Brazil. In comparison to former Pirelli calendars this year’s edition differs not only in displaying the models dressed, but also in showing two pictures entirely composed of graffiti and murals.

Watch the beautiful video here above and see here for more images from the shoot.

Pirelli Calendar 2013: Adriana Lima First Pregnant Model

PirelliCalendarAdrianaLima 540x359 Pirelli Calendar 2013: Adriana Lima First Pregnant Model

We are starting to see images via Buzzfeed from the famous Pirelli calendar for 2013–that’s Adriana Lima above–a significant shot because it’s the first time the calendar has featured a pregnant model. The big twist for this edition is it doesn’t feature naked models, a feature it has become known for. Photographer Steve McMurry who shot in Rio de Janiero had this to say on his reasons for keeping the models clothed:

“I would say I am a street photographer doing ‘found situations. You can photograph nudes anywhere. But these models are clothed, and each of them has her own charity. They are purposeful and idealistic people. So I wanted to photograph them in a special place, and Rio was perfect for this.”

And a lack of nudity isn’t the only break from the past, Pirelli also included street-shot images of people and places. Can we call this is an official end to the era of the industry’s obsession with photographing completely nude models–many of them in their teens? You know, not wearing an ounce of fashion, which is what they entered the business to do in the first place. One can dream!

Pirelli Calendar 2013 Preview: So Far No One’s Naked–What?

Pirelli2 Pirelli Calendar 2013 Preview: So Far No Ones Naked What?

Vanity Fair Italy has its mitts on preview pics for the Pirelli Calendar 2013, as shot by Steve McCurry. In a move that is sure to reduce interest in the calendar to those obsessesd with super models and fashion photography, in other words a sliver of the population, thus far it appears McCurry is photographing his subjects with ALL their clothes on. Seriously though, I sort of get it, in truth as fun as it is for the lads, this totally nude supermodel thing has become a bit long in the tooth. So me personally, I hope their dresses stay on.

That’s a shot of Isabel Fontana above, see another shot of her on the next page.

Chanel Pre-Autumn 2011 Lookbook

chanel23 Chanel Pre Autumn 2011 Lookbook

Similar to the Greek God theme of his Pirelli-calendar shoot, Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld is still feeling the allure of ancient influences with his pre-Autumn collection. And while the usual lux detailing and stitching–this time with an emphasis on gold–that make Chanel stand out from the pack are all present and accounted for, it’s quite a dark collection, especially when one considers it delivers in June. Though this appears to be the mood of designers these days–be a little more serious and get back to basics by focusing on your core customer. And if you think about who really puts down the plastic for Chanel clothes, the collection makes total sense. Over 60 more looks after the flip. Via WWD.
