Kim Kanye Lofficiel hommes 1 All Images From Kim And Kanyes Shoot For LOfficiel Hommes
Followers of Highsnobiety must have seen the cover of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West for L’Officiel Hommes magazine, which offered us a mighty intimate peek into their pompous relationship, and now we’ve got the full spread.

The rich black-and-whites photographed by Nick Knight are definitely more Kanye focussed (makes sense given the magazine’s status as a men’s pub). Maybe Kim also preferred to stay in the background as -regarding her pregnancy- whole-body pics wouldn’t have let her look as pretty as she is on the images released in the magazine. Take a look through the gallery on the next page and don’t miss to leave your comment below.

HighSnobette Best Of 2012

QueenoftheJungleMelodyEhsanijpg HighSnobette Best Of 2012

What we have always loved about fashion is it’s potential to bring joy. We as HighSnobette editors feel so lucky to not only have witnessed many of these special moments but to also have come to know and watch grow many of the artists and designers behind some of our favorite projects. Below in no particular order we share what we regard as some of the best, joy-bringing efforts of 2012:

Designer Melody Ehsani’s star has been on the rise for quite some time now, but her “Queen of the Jungle” necklace (above) in many ways stamped her official arrival. We lost count of the stylish celebrities spotted in this vivacious fun piece.

Leah McSweeney has always been a force of personality. She literally is the MTTM brand, as backed by an intensely loyal supporting staff + fan base. Like many young brands the label went through its stumbles when investors pulled out, but the tenacious McSweeney was able to hold on to the name and this year the label found its own inimitable stride again, as marked by the brand’s “Supreme Bitch” snapback cap, which received the blessing of none other mega-style star Rihanna.

See many more “bests” on the next page. And a very Happy New Year to all. Thank you so much for your support in 2012.

Illmasqua Blackface Ad

29 November 2012, 16.28 | Posted in advertisement | 6 comments »

IllamasquaBlackface 540x304 Illmasqua Blackface Ad

The ad here by British cosmetics company Illmasqua is being described as racist, in that it features a model in blackface, which has been used in performance to create a stereotyped charicature of a black person. The tophat and bowtie further support the typical look of a blackface costume. Despite a barrage of criticism the company as of yesterday continued to defend the ad (though interestingly the blackface side is not longer on its Facebook page), and made the following statement:

We thank and acknowledge your comments regarding the above image. Obviously it was never our intention to cause offence; Illamasqua has always celebrated the right to self-expression and we continually push creative and artistic boundaries, priding ourselves on working with models of many ethnic backgrounds to reinforce this point.

In covering this industry over the years it’s been my observation that people/companies often react defensively to accusations of racist behavior–which is understandable, it’s a very heavy charge to bear, no one wants to be the uncool racist guy or gal. When pointed at they respond with statements like, oh, I don’t see people based on their color or no harm was meant or this is art. But systemic racism is much bigger, more subtle and ultimately more damaging than over the top hate speech. Big picture it’s about supporting and helping to maintain a system of power, aka white supremecy.

You see tribute to the system reflected on runways, in editorials, ads and in disdain for streetwear that gets turned on its head when the same looks are shown on a runway. The vitriolic response to Kanye West’s showing in Paris was in part based in racism. And of course it’s shown in power at the top, who runs the most monied fashion companies and then too, those in charge of the most storied–Europe’s Haute Couture houses.

At this point in history, waving racism away because it wasn’t intended is a feeble excuse, especially for well educated and cultured fashion industry bigwigs, who like to pride themselves for their progressive view points. We all make mistake and stumble, life is a learning process, but in general this industry could do a lot better.

H&M x Margiela: The Two Items That Sold Out The Fastest

H&MxMargielaRedSneakers

Not saying this is a scientific study but at least at the H&M store located in the Columbus Circle mall in Manhattan, the staff uniformly agreed that the red high-top sneakers and the red “Candy Wrapper” clutch (a “re-edition” from the Spring 2010 collection–see the original here) basically blew out and were gone not long after the store opened.

Me personally I hate high-low designer collaborations and feel like they’re good for the low brand but are a long-term terrible for the high brand (I’m waiting for Alber Elbez to one day admit this). All that blah-blah-blah aside, as it happens I was in Manhattan on the day of the launch and decided to check it out. Giant failed snob that I am, I proceeded to buy three items and would have bought more but was just coming off off a budget killing CL sample sale and simply could not.

My sense at the time–and WWD has since confirmed this–was that this collection wasn’t as big  a hit as past collabos. For as much as Kanye and A$AP have made Margiela a household name for the fashion conscious youthful masses, a lot of the cuts were simply too big, boxy or artsy, making them conceptually tough for many to visualize fitting in with their wardrobes.

On a related side note….how hot is the color red lately??

See the “Candy Wrapper” clutch on the next page.

ASAP Rocky Cover Of Complex December 2012

ASAPComplexA 540x360 ASAP Rocky Cover Of Complex December 2012

A$AP Rocky grabs the cover of Complex magazine’s December 2012 issue, and chats about the imminent launch of his long-awaited album, Live.Love.A$AP.  The article includes a q&a in which Rocky, aka Rakim Mayers, discusses the changes that have come with fame, including some painful losses (which sorry but he had to be THE only one surprised by betrayal of a crew member! I mean that kind of thing is biblical).

Complex: What’s changed the most in the past year for you? Rocky: I had a lot of close friends stab me in the back for their own greedy desires. I never saw that coming. I never thought my real niggas would be on some fuck shit with me, and do wack shit. I’m a good nigga, and a lot of people fuck with me and then leave with these accusations trying to fuck up what I worked hard for.

He also brings a little fire by stating flat out that Kanye’s fashion is influenced by him.

Complex: Do you think you’re influencing people like Kanye? Rocky: Of course. That’s obvious. [Laughs.] We’re all in the same circle. He’s way richer than me, but of course he’s influenced by me. C’mon, bro. I made waxed denim cool in hip-hop. Fucking waxed denim and rips in jeans. Nobody else did that. I don’t give a fuck. I didn’t know what I was doing. These jeans are Balmain, and I wear them with a Supreme jacket. Of course I’m influencing.
