RNC 540x378 Republican National Convention Fashion

Hi all, not sure if you noticed, but our server *popped* this past weekend so alas, we could not post a thing. (Actually, not so alas, it was awesome for a few days not to have a blog hanging over one’s head! But anyway….)  I wanted to post about some of the fashion on display at the Republican National Convention, which took place in Tampa, Florida, last week. People’s fashion choices in general I find are endlessly fascinating. Eyes may be the window to the soul, but the clothes we use to cover ourselves are akin to a self portrait or autobiography, with so much being revealed about the author, whether intended or otherwise.

If you know Highsnobette, you know that the more buttoned up looks the Republican party is known for are not exactly up our alley, but that doesn’t make them any less interesting. Actually perhaps more so because they’re creating a look we are not so adept at understanding or interpreting. For example, check out the photo above taken on the floor of the convention. The sleeveless shift dress trend in Republican circles is a mainstay, as are pearls, but note how the young woman in white wears her–they’re pearls, yes, but modernized by making them gigantic. Sort of awesome……that is, if you like pearls. (Or not?? Is it actually somehow to wrong to bastardize such a classic stone?)

And then there’s the party’s obsession with red, a color the average fashionista eschews–Mitt Romney’s wife gave a speech in a a red dress designed by friend to many first ladies, Oscar de la Renta, meanwhile vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan’s wife gave a nod to the middle class by attending her man’s speech in a $150 green (of course, shift) dress by women’s chain Talbots.

Hang on to your cowboy hat and see more convention attendee looks on the next page.
