Video: Drake Ft. Rihanna ‘Take Care’

The video captures the song’s story amazingly well! First, it opens with scenes of frozen mountains. This symbolizes the Rihanna character’s heart. She’s been hurt and now her heart is frozen. She does not give it to one man or a relationship. She is a party girl, a player with walls that keep her from letting love (Drake) in.

The Drake character is the good guy, the loving guy who really cares for Rihanna. He is symbolized by the strong passionate bull.

Notice how Rihanna looks into the camera while Drake is looking down, introspectively? Rihanna is symbolized by the bird. With its cold eyes, always ready to take flight. Even as she sings she will take care of Drake, the bird is shown readying to take off and fly away. Then, as she sings “I’ll take care of you” while embracing Drake, look how she looks into the camera. If she was committed to him, in love, allowing her heart to be open, she would be focused on Drake, she would not be looking into the camera as though keeping her eye open for the next guy that comes along.

In the next scene we see Drake as though free falling. He is literally disintegrating. This symbolizes what this relationship is doing to him. It is literally tearing him apart while the Rihanna character, her heart frozen and detached, remains protected and cold, ready to take-off like the bird, uncommitted.

Again, Rihanna is shown embracing but looking away, never allowing herself to really connect with Drake.

We then see the two Siamese Fighting Fish. This is important symbolism because these fish are never put together. They are beautiful but the so-called fighting fish are destined to live a life of isolation. This is how you see them. Always in a bowel, alone. This is Rihanna’s character. She cannot be with someone in a committed relationship. She will destroy it, tear it apart like a fighting fish, as this video shows by the disintegration of Drake.

But Rihanna is not happy in her life. We can see this when she says she has loved and she’s lost as she looks down, clasping her hands. By walling in her heart she too has made herself a prisoner.

Drake too is in pain as he turns inward in the next frame.

We then see the cold bird, the frozen mountains and then the bull. But this time smoke appears to be coming off the bull and it too begins to disintegrate. The bull symbolizing the Drake character.

Then the bird takes flight and arrows assail the bull. Rihanna has shown her inability to commit, to love. The bird represents her not being there, leaving. The arrows reflect the bull under attack, Drake’s heart. Rihanna is sabotaging their relationship.

Now we see a landscape on fire. Burning. This symbolizes their relationship. The bird twists its head as though to shake off its connection to Drake. The bull shakes to stop the pain as it is disintegrating. Meanwhile Drake is literally disintegrating as he freefalls. The landscape is now black, burned and barren, symbolizing what remains of their relationship and its effects on Drake. He’s been burned, and perhaps, so badly hurt his heart is blackened as well by Rihanna’s play.
