Don Cornelius RIP

02 February 2012, 02.05 | Posted in Music | No comments »

Don Cornelius passed today, reports are saying suicide. Just spent some time on YouTube loading up on what is Cornelius’s greatest legacy in my opinion, the Soul Train dance line, bringing back memories of loved/hated regular dancers, the funny props, holiday-appropriate costumes, the fashion(!), the amazing dance dance moves and definitely the sheer joy of a moment. Always it was the part of the show you didn’t want to miss.

Questlove is known for his great love for Soul Train, he obssessively collected old show recordings, rare because Cornelius never seemed pushed to reissue them (I think they’re now available, not sure). Anyway, you can read a Cornelius-dedicated essay posted today by Questlove at Okayplayer and here’s an excerpt:

“to say with a straight, dignified face that BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL was the RISKIEST radical life-changing move that america has seen. and amazingly enough for one hour for one saturday out the week, if you were watching soul train….it became contagious. next thing you know you are actually believing you have some sort of worth.”

….and you can bet your last money, it’s all gonna be a stone gas, honey! I’m Don Cornelius, and as always in parting, we wish you love, peace and soul!
