Tom Nijhuis ‘1995′ Dance-Inspired Collection

06 December 2011, 14.00 | Posted in Uncategorized | 1 comment »

TomNijhuis (1)

Dutch designer Tom Nijhuis warms our hearts with his “1995″ athletic-centric collection, a tribute to the mid-’90s “gabber” dance scene in Holland. In an interview with DIS magazine, Nijhuis is asked about his “obsession” with athletic looks:

“The collection is a stylistic portrayal of gabber. It is sporty since I tried to stay close to the wardrobe of the gabber, which only consists of sportswear. I am not that sporty a person and remembered somebody telling me that she never expected by the looks of me that I made this collection. Then again, I do love all the trademarks of sportswear: the technical fabrics and their vibrant colors, the textures and strength, zippers, mesh, stretch waistbands, and its youthfulness.”

Book: Nailed The History Of Nail Culture

06 December 2011, 13.38 | Posted in Uncategorized | 1 comment »

NailedHistoryOfNailCulture Book: Nailed The History Of Nail Culture

The one we’ve been waiting for–Nailed: A History Of Nail Culture, edited by Chicago-based artist Dzine, the book recounts the history of nail adornment and documents contemporary nail art around the world. As for the author’s credentials, according to press:

The child of first generation Puerto Rican immigrants, Dzine fondly recalls the bootleg salon his mother set up in his childhood home and the sense of community it created.  It is this environment––the nexus of Nail Art Culture––that inspired Dzine to tell a story that was honest, while staying true to his studio practice. Dzine states, “The people involved in this community have no formal art training, yet their passion to make beautiful, over-the-top ornamental objects is what truly struck me, hence the body of work. It has reminded me why I’m an artist and why I choose to create.”

Nailed is the second title published by the The Standard Hotel’s imprint, The Standard Press, and until February 1st is only available for $45 through The Standard shops and web store. More images from the book on the next page.

Rihanna Wears Grunge-Inspired Outfit In Concert

Rihanna1 359x540 Rihanna Wears Grunge Inspired Outfit In Concert

Rihanna’s outfit featuring a waist-tied ”shirt” for a recent performance in London, very much brings to mind Marc Jacob’s notorious Spring ‘93 grunge collection for Perry Ellis, which was so controversial it eventual led to his dismissal (who’s sorry now Perry Ellis??). My guess is that Rihanna’s skirt-shirt wasn’t designed by anyone, rather created by a savvy stylist, with the military lace-up boots Jacob’s favored updated with black, lace-up stilettos.

It’s funny that Jacob’s collection is so celebrated now because at the time it was reviled not just by fashion folks but also the punks who inspired it, including Courtney Love, who has claimed she and her husband, Kurt Cobain, burned it after Jacobs sent it to them. But oh how minds have changed. Back then, the runways and the fashion community were  viewed as the establishment, and now, street and fashion are practically joined at the hip!

After the flip see the Sonic Youth video “Sugar Kane,” which was filmed in the Perry Ellis showroom and shows pieces from the grunge collection, plus features an up and coming Chloe Sevigny.  There’s an also a 2001 excerpt from an Index magazine interview, in which Jacobs discusses the 1993 collection, described by him as his “favorite.”
