Adriana Lima X Donna Karan Ad = Poorly Executed
This Donna Karan ad featuring Adriana Lima shot in Haiti with some “real” Haitians serving as a backdrop is ruffling some feathers. The biggest issue is that the shot was poorly executed. Whatever the original intent was and it was probably good, somewhere it got very lost in the translation. I mean, the first time I glanced at this ad I didn’t even see the kids.

The idea of locals in the ad is great but for why do they not rock some Donna Karan gear? And why are they hunched in a corner admiring the pretty model. This particular setting reinforces a weird class stereotype . This picture does not make the Haitian locals look at all powerful or inspiring which I am sure was the intent of having a shoot in Haiti. Not hating on Donna , as the whole initiative she has in Haiti is amazing but this image contradicts all the hard work of elevating Haiti and its artisans.
Exploitation has no tact… Next there will be circulating pics of White models saving kids with big heads and swollen belly kids with flies swarming around the kids heads..
Oprah Winfrey went to Haiti with one agenda–To get things rolling, and she did it 10 MILLION TIMES. All it took was one F’ing trip. She was not there to survey the land/country to see where she can build sweatshops–There’s a profound lesson to be learned here folks. I want to thank you my African Princess; you have done what many are able to do, have chosen not to. I LOVE YOU, BECAUSE YOU GET IT. The Haitian community appreciate what you have done.
