Highsnobette- Lake+Stars-Boffo by Evan Joseph

Definitely a visual treat, the BOFFO x The Lake & Stars Pop-up shop designed by Softlab takes the lingerie labels seductive aesthetic to sleek futuristic levels. Walking into the space, you’re greeted by a giant screen tv playing a pole  performance with the Lake & Stars-clad dancers and tucked along one side of the room is a mini shop set up  like sci-fi peep show. A peek into various plexi-glass windows gives you access to  mannequins wearing iconic TL&S  lingerie while throughout the shop are items designed exclusively for the event, including voodoo candles, magnets and various other gift items. Enough words, take a look at some images courtesy of Boffo on the flip and visit if you happen to be in New York. Read more

Denham The Jean Maker ‘Shopper’ Bag

231.20.001 grey tints 01 486x540 Denham The Jean Maker Shopper Bag

Having a bag break and its precious content spill all over public transit is a story all too familiar to the point where the obsession with durability is almost a little manic. As a result I for one  do not trust most store bags and usually bring my own, so the idea of a good sturdy shopper like the one recently released by Denham The Jeanmaker is one I embrace with both hands.  Featuring subtle colors, leather reinforcements, durable fabrics  and  a menswear look that makes it all the more covetable. You can get it  here.

16 November 2011, 20.43 | Posted in Uncategorized | 1 comment »

Here is the video of the House of Dereon runway presentation for Selfridges, held during London Fashion Week a couple months back. At the time of the show the product was already in the store (where it’s exclusive in the U.K.) so what you’re seeing is Autumn 2011 product. The show is introduced by Beyonce with a post-apolytic statement on society as a “melting pot of cultures, tradition and language drawing inspiration from every corner of the world,” reflecting the line’s “global nomad” themes.

Video: Kid Sister Ft. Danny Brown ‘Gucci Rag Top’

16 November 2011, 15.14 | Posted in Uncategorized | 1 comment »

Chicago-based Kid Sister has launched the second video, “Gucci Rag Top,” from her four-song EP, Kiss & Tell, which goes on sale on November 29th on itunes. Featuring slick work from both Ms. Sister and Detroit’s Danny Brown, video director, Alex 2Tone, cleverly uses a a scrolling Tumblr called Gucci Rag Top as a backdrop, which if it exists in reality I’m not finding it.

Also check out Kid Sister with her hair now cropped, flashing her latest of set of long nails. Far from a newcomer to the artform of done nails, rather she was a pioneer of the current wave, throwing down the guantlet in a video called ”Pro Nails” ft. Kanye West back in 2008. See it on the next page.

Daphne Guinness: Fashion Ended W Grunge?

HiphopKanyeAmberRose 540x365 Daphne Guinness: Fashion Ended W Grunge?

Fashion wonder Daphne Guiness was interviewed recently in Interview magazine. It’s a great interview, very much worthy of a read, but one line in particular stuck out. In speaking about fashion movements she says:

“There hasn’t been anything real since grunge. That was the last movement led by music or an art form.”

The grunge or prefer punk fashion movement was indeed a great one–stunning in the way it essentially took all that came before it, tore it down literally to shreds and reconstructed it into something brand new. Punk was so great that it’s achieved a sort of classic status in that designers from now to eternity are sure to reference it in a cyclical manner like they do all the great fashion eras.

Still, there most definitely have been fashion movements since “grunge,” or at least running concurrent with it–starting with hip-hop style, which is marked by its royal (as in African royalty, people) celebration of adornment and boldface style, including big fur, flashy jewellery, animal prints, body-conscious silhouettes, all of which is often mixed up with athletic looks (a tribute to the great successes of black athletes?) like track suits and sneakers. And then there’s the whole beauty supply world of nail art, false eye lashes, bold lip colors, hair extensions, etc!

Sure, there was over-the-top style before hiphop and rap came along (thank you disco and soul and funk) but who could deny that the movement didn’t put its own extremely special stamp on the look just like punk did rock ‘n’ roll and create a style who’s influence has been at least as huge as punk’s.

In another line, Guiness describes the current fashion movement as “corporate.” Agree somewhat but not entirely…but that is for another post entirely.

On the next page some more hiphop fashion looks from back in the day,a  look that is still alive and evolving.
