Converse x Marimekko Sneakers Autumn 2011

converse marimekko sneakers fall11 2 Converse x Marimekko Sneakers Autumn 2011

Looks like there are more canvass sneaker styles to come from the Converse collaboration with Finnish design house Marimekko, and this one includes “the most famous Marimekko Marimekko print of all time, the Unikko [poppy] design, originally from 1964 by Maija Isola, to which her daughter Kristina Isola has created a new coloring and scale for the Converse shoes.” Look for this to hit retail June 23rd. Backpacks Are Back

FashionBackpacks Backpacks Are Back

Used to be back in the ’90s backpacks were the hot item in New York City. You’d go to a coat check at a party (Giant Step, anyone?) and it’d be filled with (mostly) guys’ Northface backpacks. And then those Prada nylon mini-ones became huge and at at that time the counterfeiters were at the height of their powers and you could buy a very good copy all over New York City. In terms of popularity that Prada bag was akin to the LV Speedy today–so everywhere you couldn’t help but think, “Real or fake?” everytime you laid eyes on it.

So anyway, now Shopbop is saying they’re back in style again. Fashion repeats itself, yes, but always with a twist so it’ll be interesting to see how this trend works itself out this time around…if it does at all.

Rihanna Kicks Off ‘Loud’ Tour In Baltimore

RihannaLoudBaltimore 438x540 Rihanna Kicks Off Loud Tour In Baltimore

Our gal Rihanna kicked off her “Loud” tour in Baltimore, last night. Apparently one of the highlights of the show was her giving a female audience member a lap dance. You can find the video on Youtube.

On another note entirely, Gucci is being sued by former employee, Josephine Robinson, a tax lawyer specialist, who said in her suit she was treated like less than because she is black, with her boss making racist jokes to and around her. The reason we bring this up here is because Rihanna is part of her accusations. Allegedly upon discovering Rihanna was Caribbean, Robinson was told by Gucci to up her tax rate and pull back 30 percent of the fee she was to be paid for her part in Gucci’s Tattoo Heart accessory campaign. Which, you have to figure Rihanna’s accountants are very busy crunching some numbers this morning!

Video: Kanye West’s ‘Monster’

After much delay, the official video for Kanye West’s “Monster” has arrived. Already it’s been roundly attacked for its brutal portrayal of women–a debate for the ages no doubt. Kanye as a black man is definitely playing with some serious taboos, though the hanging white women in the video bring to mind that famous black and white photo of Thomas Shipp and Abram Smith being lyched in front of a mob of white men and women who watched or participated in the event. Many years ago, it’s true, but the question of where and who exactly the monster is remains an intriguing question.

Did Nicki change stylists? We like the cleaner looks she’s been sporting lately. Her overly-crazy wig game was becoming a distraction.

You’ll see on the next page that her top is actually a vest layered over a black bra.

A beautiful juxtaposition of prints that makes Têca one of our favorites from Brazil. Although it’s very forward to be looking at next spring, we have to take the time to admire the prints, the color orange and the presence of the midi lenght skit which seems to be existing calmly net to the ever present mini. Enjoy!

Daphne Guinness ‘Undressed’ Film

Daphne Guinness: Undressed on Nowness.com.

Documentary filmmaker Brennan Stasiewicz infiltrates the cosseted world of Daphne Guinness in Daphne’s Window. Featuring intimate footage of the icon at her Fifth Avenue apartment, the short follows the eccentric fashion patron and socialite as she prepares for her recent installation in the windows of Barneys New York. The storefront showcased her collection of pieces by designer Lee Alexander McQueen and a selection from the archive of fashion editor Isabella Blow, which Guinness purchased in its entirety last year. The display culminated in a performance art piece in which Guinness dressed for the Met ball in one of the flagship’s windows, modeling a lilac feathered gown designed by McQueen’s Sarah Burton. “She appears to me as someone always in a window,” says Stasiewicz. “Someone you can approach and see, but you remain on the other side.” This year brings a multitude of projects for the heiress: her sculptural armored glove collaboration with jeweler Shaun Leane (pictured in today’s film) will be exhibited by Jay Jopling in a private viewing in London later this month; and in September a retrospective at The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology will pay homage to her style. “Daphne is someone to take pleasure in, and in many ways, someone who incites moments of wonder,” says Stasiewicz.
