The images featured here are from the opening ceremony for France’s Cannes Film Festival and the “Midnight In Paris” movie premiere. Above is actress Fan Bingbing, whose gown we liked (and whose last name is so fun to pronounce!). In general the red carpet theme du jour was grown-woman elegance, reflected in form-fitting, strapless gowns in solid colors. Nothing earth-shattering from a fashion perspective but plenty of above-average pageantry–worth a look if only to spot the subtle differences from a typical U.S. red carpet event.
There are many more images, including Uma Thurman, Karolina Kurkova, Bianca Balti, Grace Hightower, Rachel McAdams, etc., on the next page. Enjoy!
In advance of her upcoming album, “4,” Beyonce has begun gearing up her publicity machine starting with a cover on Billboard magazine.
Beyonce is an amazing human whose success we love to see, ’nuff said, but in many ways she reminds me of a well-regarded CEO of a major corporation. When it comes to running the company and producing, clearly she brings an elite talent to the table that puts others to shame, but still, what the world witnesses is always on message and there is little to nothing left to chance. Beyonce’s themes (and Rihanna’s and Lady Gaga’s) may be more provocative than those of your average corporation because they’re ”artists,” but still there’s a plan in place. In her case, the message is female empowerment and sisters having it all, which hey, you can’t knock that hustle and why would you even want to.

Women within the narrow little world of what they call “tastemakers” or “influencers” from the Snobette point of view have gotten the short end of the stick. We won”t bore you with our in depth analysis of the situation and maybe that is slowly changing. One of our faves–so far the only WOMAN who managed to have a Jordan under her belt, Miss Vashtie Kola is featured in the New York Times! A mag feature does not bring legitimacy to talent, influence or just flat out cool factor, but when we look at the shine obtained by her male counterparts, honey, we are snapping, clapping and twirling with joy. Read the feature here.
When it’s really warm and sunny (which we love) and you just want to throw something on without thinking too much–because really every change makes you sweat more–sporting a chic fedora does the trick of transforming whatever you put on from drab to fab with very little effort. Loving the nod to Masai beading by Etro. Via net-a-porter.
We showed the teaser video last week and now we have images of modern-day bombshell Amber Rose from the cover of King magazine. Inside she chats about her new love, Wiz Khalifa, and how he compares to Kanye. She says,
“You know when people say how do you go from Kanye to Wiz Khalifa, that’s a downgrade. But the only question I can ask them is: have you ever dated Kanye? Because I have, and believe me, I did not downgrade at all. Not in any aspect, at all.”
U.K. label The Rodnik Band pays tributes to its favorite artists with a collection of dresses titled “Venus In Sequins.” The “Urinal” dress above, for example, was inspired by Marcel Duchamp. Designed by Philip Colbert and shown during London Fashion Week, the dresses are limited to about six for each style and are currently available for purchase on Notjustalabel.
After the flip, see seven more styles, inspired by Vincent Van Gough, Andy Warhol, Tom Wesselmann, Roy Lichenstein and Mondrian.
Lady Gaga is on the cover of an upcoming V Magazine, which will be Asian-themed…..except apparently for the image that fronts the issue. She’s photographed by Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin and style by, you guessed it, Nicola Formichetti.
See another V Magazine cover image of Lady Gaga, this time ”Bollywood”-themed, on the next page.
