John Galliano Fights Back

BernardArnault John Galliano Fights Back

Since we posted the news of John Galliano being accused of hurling anti-Semitic remarks at a couple in Paris a couple days back, the rumors have been flying. And now we have some actual news from his lawyer from WWD:

His lawyer Stephane Zerbib told WWD the designer visited police in Paris’ third arrondissement at midnight on Friday to provide three witness statements that he never made any such comments. The designer has also filed a claim of defamation and injury against the couple – identified on Le Figaro’s Web site as Géraldine Bloch, 35, and Philippe Virgiti, 41 – and is now awaiting the decision of police, Zerbib said. Zerbib also said Galliano is “shocked” that Dior – citing a zero-tolerance policy on racism and anti-Semitism – suspended him from his job functions pending the outcome of the police investigation.

Christian Dior, while a storied fashion house, is also part of a publically traded, mega-corporation, Christian Dior S.A. to be exact, which has ties to LVMH Moet Hennessy Group, an even more massive public company (which has been in the news recently for irritating the heck out of Hermes). Above is an image of Bernard Arnault, the CEO and Chairman of both companies and the richest man in France. Some have implied that this happened because Christian Dior Couture has been struggling financially and leadership were looking for reasons to dump Galliano. And while its true it’s underperformed its luxury peers, it recently reported a positively-received earnings quarter. Still, given the strangeness of corporations, especially ones of this size, it’s shocking to read that Galliano is “shocked.” After all, however, legendary he may be to the fashion world, he’s still a weirdo outsider to corporate and as such, his head can be offed for the most whimish of reasons.

Bjorg Jewellery 2011 Lookbook

Bjorg2011 (12)

Norway-based Bjorg Jewellery has released its yearly lookbook, and according to press describing the 2011 collection:

The 2011 collection from Bjørg is in it self a journey. It’s a playful quest of a paradise lost to be recollected. Multicoloured feathers, bright blue horsehair and fluorescent opals, the beauty and fragility of a butterfly wing forever captured and kept in a small handmade glass dome. All reminiscences of that imaginary Garden of Eden.

The butterfly wings shown above are certainly fascinating, but there’s plenty other lust-worthy items in the collection.  See the rest of the lookbook on the next page.

More Beyonce Images From L’Officiel Magazine

BeyonceL'Officiel

We posted a video and a page scan from Beyonce’s editorial with L’Officiel magazine last week, and it seems the mag is capitalizing on the moment by distributing some outtakes from the shoot [UPDATE: Actually no, what's available now is all the images, not just the page scan]. The fact that Beyonce appeared in blackface has created a lot of controversy, as it always does,  but what’s sort of interesting on a side note is that in all her blackface images she’s really serious and not smiling. Can’t help but wonder if that was where she drew the line, like, it’s one thing if I’m in blackface, but I’m sure as heck not going to be cheesing it up like the stereotype. Via Fashiontography. The entire editorial on the next page.

John Galliano Suspended By Christian Dior

25 February 2011, 16.47 | Posted in Couture | 1 comment »

The news is flying all over the fashion world at the speed of high drama that John Galliano has been suspended by Christian Dior just days before his runway show. Apparently he got wasted in Paris last night and popped off to some couple on the street and included among his triple snaps were some anti-Semetic statements. Good one, John, cheez.

The above video, by the way, is one of Galliano teaching a young Kate Moss how to walk his runway. It was posted by a site (which I would credit but now can’t find) referencing that Galliano would be designing the dress for Kate Moss’s upcoming wedding.

Proenza Schouler Interviewed By Chloe Sevigny

ProenzaSchouler Proenza Schouler Interviewed By Chloe Sevigny

If Tom Ford has the fashion internets the most annoyed than Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, the design duo behind Proenza Schouler, has them the most charmed. Between winning (no, it’s not the playoffs, but yeah it sort of is) New York Fashion Week with their computerized Navaho collection and then gushing about how important the internets are–no less to a room full of bloggers, who for that moment didn’t have to suffer from their usual inferiority complex, they’re totally in that everyone-loves phase right now.

And Chloe Sevigny’s chat with them in Interview magazine doesn’t make them any less lovable.  Here’s an excerpt detailing how Hernandez lost their dog in his building when it accidentally got into the elevator by itself and wandered into an event taking place on another floor.

Hernandez: Well, I get to the lobby and there are hundreds of people. There’s a line down to Broome Street. I asked some guy, “Have you seen a dog?” He’s like, “Oh, yeah. Someone left a dog in the elevator. I don’t know where he went. He’s somewhere in the building.” I have no idea it’s Harmony [Korine]’s or Rita [Ackermann]’s opening. So I go to the Swiss Institute and it’s packed with hundreds of people. My dog weighs five pounds! I’m freaking out.
Sevigny: Someone stepped on him.
Hernandez: More like, someone stole him. One of these fucking hipsters stole my dog.
Sevigny: Does he have a collar on?
Hernandez: Nothing. No!
Sevigny: Well, that’s an irresponsible owner.
Hernandez: I’m at this party. I start bumping into Harmony and Terry [Richardson] and all these people. I’m thrown into this party environment and I’m just looking for my dog. I’m really scared. All of a sudden you call me. I thought you were at the party and you had seen me or something. I thought, Oh, Chloë must be here. I picked up, and you said, “Did you lose your dog?”

And the adorable cuteness doesn’t end there. There’s more about their design process, competition and how Helmut Lang is the inspiration for their generation. As a bonus we all learn how to pronounce Sevigny. Of course hopefully they enjoy it while it lasts because this is fashion, after all, and every dog has his day. Tom Ford Opens Store In L.A.

TFTomFord 382x540 Tom Ford Opens Store In L.A.

Tom Ford had a store opening party in Los Angeles on Rodeo Drive yesterday. It’s his first store with an entire floor dedicated to womenswear. No one with an internet connection was allowed to attend. (That’s a joke for anyone who’s thinking of reporting it as actual news.) Seriously though, if there is an industry leader who has created more ill will among the fashion internets–you know, that place all those “international fashion magazines” are scrambling to draw traffic as their print subscriptions circle the drain–I’m not sure who it is.

Images of Amber Valletta. Ginnifer Goodwin, Milla Jovovich, Eva Longoria, Rachel Zoe and a few others–a lot of whom are wearing designs from Tom Ford’s Spring runway–on the next page.

Milan Fashion Week: Gucci Autumn/Winter 2011

Gucci10Web Milan Fashion Week: Gucci Autumn/Winter 2011

Depending on where your fashion references are placed in time, Frida Gianini’s latest runway collection for Gucci can leave you cold or heart palpitating gasping for air hot. I join the latter. Representing an era,  illustrating glamour so palpable it’s almost heavy, there is no denying the sense of female sensual power, and extravagant opulence this collection exudes. Forget reality, this is the kind of fantasy fashion provides that had me  fall in love with it  in the first place.  I say dream a little and  luxuriate ! Enjoy a few images via Thesartorialist on the next page.
