zanabayne15 540x358 Interview: Zana Bayne Leather Spring/Summer 2011

If you’ve read us for a while or read our “about” section, you’ll know we have a taste for the sexy and uncommon. Fittingly we had to give shine to Zana Bayne whose latest collection of accessories, which includes belts, spats and her sexy take on the leather harness, is launching for sale online 1.1.11 ( stay tuned for more info on that). Meanwhile,  on the next page read our Q&A with Zana and take a look at her sleek collection that is so HighSnobette approved it makes us weak in the knees…

-Hello Zana, we are definitely smitten with your latest collection. Tell us a little about your design background?

Hi HighSnobette! As far as leatherwork, I am almost entirely self taught – but I’ve been making things with my hands  for as long as I can remember. I’ve enjoyed making clothing for myself since I was young, but never studied garment construction. I have a BFA in New Genres (conceptual art) from San Francisco Art Institute, where I spent my time doing everything from video work, installation, fabric sculptures, etc…

-What brought you to harnesses in the first place? Was the intent to provide restraint bondage gear? Or is the endeavour purely about fashion?

I first made a harness for myself out of elastic and keyrings, and later crafted one from “veg” (undyed) leather. I got such a positive response from my blog that I sold a couple to a few early readers. Then I moved to Berlin, and didn’t have any tools or resources, but when I moved to New York I started playing around with leather again and never stopped. I like to think that my pieces can be worn in several situations, from casual daywear to traditional bondage. I personally love wearing harnesses to give shape to dresses, or simply worn over outerwear.

-Hands down your favorite item of clothing?

This is terrible! Its a tie between my Veronique Branquinho ankle boots which I’ve worn non stop for a couple of years, and my Rick Owens leather jacket that I just bought as a holiday gift for myself.

-Your Favorite Zana Bayne piece to make or to wear?

Right now I love wearing my “Necklace Harness” from the SS11 collection, because I can get away with wearing a really simple outfit and instantly create some visual complexity by having that piece on! (reference: zanabayne10.jpg) Also the “Pentagram Harness” from my FW10/Continuous collection is always a crowd pleaser.

-Sneakers or Heels?

Boots with heels! I only wear sneakers to the gym, but I do have a pair of wedge boots that I’ve nicknamed my “sneakers” do to their comfort.

-Fave designers and/ or source of inspiration?

I have so much respect and admiration for Riccardo Tisci’s vision for Givenchy. Additionally, I can always find new points of inspiration from looking through issues of Encens Magazine and Sang Bleu Magazine.
