Lanvin Spring/Summer 2011 Runway Video

Lanvin Spring/Summer 2010 made me happy in so many ways.  Sleek, modern with hints of what Jil Sander was when she was designing, and of course womanly with not a hint of junior. While the video does a good job of highlighting the apparel, on the next page enjoy a look at our fave accessories via Style.

Alexander McQueen Hair And Nails Spring 2011

So the “Highland Rape” days are clearly behind us….personality is so huge in fashion and we hardly know this new Sarah Burton, and now that her tribute collection is out of the way, time will tell who she turns out to be and whether or not anyone cares once we do know. In the meantime, the hair was pretty amazing and the nails [UPDATE: Via Voguebeautyblog, Nails by Minx, as applied by Marian Newman] were okay, too. Not off the charts, but hey, at least attention was paid to them. More looks including some closeups on the garments after the flip. Via Style.

 Chanel Accessories Spring/Summer 2011

Chanel’s spring 2011 ready-to-wear collection had that same overly sensible theme of a lot of the more prestigous houses, as in boxy longish dresses, very little reveal of curves, sensible shoes….I understand the need to appeal to the women actually buying these clothes, especially in these tough economic times, but honestly I weep! But anyway, the point of this post is to zero in on Chanel’s accessories, which seem to be the only thing that matters these days among the heavy hitters designers, as in those with a large boutique chain business where rent must be paid. So that being said Chanel’s bags were a delight, very covetable, and somewhere in my future there exists a pair of velvet sandals. More after the flip, including closeups on some very neat earrings. m361 Alexander McQueen Spring/Summer 2011

Having to fill some really big shoes, Sarah Burton presented her first collection for Alexander McQueen yesterday. Staying  true to what has been the “‘McQueen” aesthetic, with what Tim Blanks at Style refers to as having  a woman’s touch. Edgy but softer, relaxed and of course optimistic, as if to make a statement that this amazing legacy will live on. Enjoy a look at Alexander McQueen Spring/Summer 2011 on the next page via Style.

Body Unbound: Contemporary Couture from The IMA’s Collection

05 October 2010, 16.46 | Posted in Art, Fashion | 2 comments »

Body Unbound: Contemporary Couture from the IMA’s Collection, on view from April 10, 2010 to January 30, 2011, will examine the many ways designers have manipulated, transformed and liberated the female figure. The exhibition will feature groundbreaking designs by Rudi Gernreich, Issey Miyake, Junya Watanabe, Thierry Mugler, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Gianni Versace and other avant-garde fashion designers. Body Unbound will explore how these designers used modern construction and unexpected materials to contort, conceal, reveal or mock their wearers.

Fashions by visionaries Rudi Gernreich and Jean-Paul Gaultier illustrate how some designers played with the notions of shape and construction, challenging mid-century ideals of form. Examples by Issey Miyake and Junya Watanabe, based on the theories of androgyny and “universal beauty,” demonstrate how Japanese designers working in Paris in the 1980s and 1990s promoted an alternate way of styling the body, concealing its contours and silhouette.Pieces by Thierry Mugler, Gianni Versace and Franco Moschino display how designers utilized innovative textiles and subversive design elements to toy with the concepts of seduction and femininity.

Featuring a range of works, many of which are recent additions to the IMA’s fashion arts collection, Body Unbound will demonstrate how some of the most influential designers of the 20th century helped shape the direction of avant-garde fashion. Organized by the Indianapolis Museum of Art, Body Unbound: Contemporary Couture from the IMA’s Collection will be on view in the Paul Textile and Fashion Arts galleries. The IMA will be its sole venue.
