This is a video made in conjunction with Zoe Saldana’s Envy ad campaign for Calvin Klein. She comes off a bit stiff, probably because she’s having to explain why she thinks Calvin Klein lingerie is the shizz so totally understandable. Still, she has that beautiful dancer’s body so if you turn off the volume, there’s a lot of lovliness to behold.

There’s been a lot of internet buzz around Hermes’ scarf campaign and now a site has been launched (which is where the above image is pulled from). It features women from major cities, photographed out and about, living their lives. If ever there was evidence of the influence of streetwear style seeping into the mainstream, this would be it. The recognition of the movement is great, but I’d be so much more excited if the M.O.B., Hellz and Claws of the world were reaping the benefits of recognition from a movement they helped start, along with getting their hands on an ad budget the same size as Hermes. Maybe then the featured models wouldn’t all look so damn the same. I mean, do no black women love their scarves? NY-based photographer Julia Chesky had a dream-come-true moment with the recent opening of Lanvin’s first NY store, for which she photographed both both interior and exterior shots. Normally she doesn’t get past the glass windows so judging from her comments the new perspective was an eye-opening one. Our favorite images were the ones like this one that zeros in on details and take us out of the display. One thing that’s so often missed with lux lines whether the images are taken from runways or storefront or magazine editorials is the beautiful detailing that goes into the products themselves or the background items used to enhance the setting. That’s why close-ups of bags, shoes, accessories, and make-up are golden–we rarely get them. More at Chesky’s blog, Modelizing.
Translating as faithful and loyal in Spanish Fiel , the shoe brand made their fame designing the kind of flip flops you pretty much want to live in.We would call it the perfect city flip flop. While I was visiting designer Melody Ehsani’s site just now, I spotted the ad posted on this page. Interesting I thought. And after a little searching I discovered that Jezebel had jumped all over it and declared it a possible fake because a word was misspelled in the copy. They reached out to Nike, whose p.r. reps said it was indeed a fake. Well, I for one am not buying that it didn’t come from somewhere within Nike. First off, Nike is known to very much be in catch-up mode, trying to undo some of the damage to its women’s shoe sales, hurt by those toning shoes by Skechers and Reebok because once again, it managed to forget women exist as part of its customer base. And this ad fits perfectly into every sneaker’s company’s new pitch, which is about appealing to a woman’s desire to have a toned body. And second, Nike p.r. returned a phone call to the press??? Now that is as about as farfetched an idea as I’ve heard in a while! Unless it has a very specific agenda, Nike rarely says peep. Funny, though, how Nike managed to send Jezebel the print ad it’s now legitimately running in mags, which the Jezzie’s very nicely published free of charge, I’m sure.
P.S. to Nike, being a woman with a big butt doesn’t mean you have to be enemies with women who are slim. And you can have a big butt and still be skinny for that matter!
Super stunner Halle Berry will be featured on the cover of September Vogue. Yes, you read that right, Vogue is putting a woman of color not on its barely-read August issue, but front and center of its most important book. Berry hasn’t done a lot of talking to the press lately, but the cover on the most coveted month was an offer she couldn’t refuse, “What that means for a woman of color and what that means in the fashion world, what that means to pop culture, there was no way I could say, ‘No, I’m not going to be on the biggest issue of the year.’” If you’re looking for an award, Vogue….okay, twist our arms you get one, we give you a big giant L for lateness. As for Berry, all we can say is thank you for your very big shoulders and putting up with all the resultant b.s. that comes with that.
