New Release M.I.A ‘ Born Free’ Video

We’ve been fans of  MIA in these parts way before she hit it big  and became  in her own way a fashion icon. Compelled by the comment of one of our readers, we’re featuring her latest video” Born Free”. Definitely not a dance tune. War and violence are serious occurences that for many of us are distant far away occurences but for others your truly included  are more than ever close to home. The reality of fashion trends illustrate that we  all have different views and opinions and reaction on pretty much every thing . These images I’m sure were meant to provoke. Knowing MIA that is probably the intent…

  2. cool. this is what I didn’t understand: why gingers? I think maybe those kids were targeted because if we are buying into the notion that there exists a racial hierarchy, whites have historically been at the top. MIA often points out flaws with that popular, albeit racist mode of thinking. gingers are the lightest of the white, according to this racial stratification based arbitrarily on skin color. if we want to point out the unfoundedness of racialized thinking then this image of ‘extreme whiteness’ is deliberately juxtaposed on the sociopolitical realities of ‘brown enemies.’

if anyone has other theories, i’m pretty curious, since she probably won’t say anything about it herself (and if she did—-> linkme) .
