Rodarte X Todd Cole Short Film: ‘Aanteni’

01 March 2010, 21.04 | Posted in Art, Designer Collaboration | No comments »

Rodarte&ToddCole

The Rodarte sisters, Kate and Laura Mulleavy, teamed up with video artist Todd Cole to create a super artsy film, called “Aanteni,” which features model Guinevere van Seenus in three diffrent looks from the label’s Spring 2010 collection. Above is a still from the video featured on Nowness. There were times where I felt like the short would have been more accurately named “Escape from the Runway!” about a model on the run after refusing to subject herself to the hazzards of sky-high heels, but mostly the gorgeousness of Guinevere combined with the intricate designs of the dresses are capivating. In addition to the film there is also a post explaining the inspiration for Rodarte’s most recent collection (including the melty Kirkwood heels) and a third entry explaining the motivation for the film.

Barneys Japan X Agyness Deyn

 Barneys Japan X Agyness Deyn

Barneys Japan is teaming up with British model Agyness Deyn to create a collection of 11 items–dresses, knits, scarves, tee-shirts and leggings. They’ll retail from 18,900 to 27,300 yen (aka, $212-$307). The collection launches in Barneys’ new store in Kobe on Friday, and proceeds will go…and this is an interesting one…to planting trees in inner Mongolia. Interesting! As for the images WWD included with the article, I mean wow, it’s almost like someone was trying to make them look like leftovers from a Forever21 sale.

Mary Katrantzou Autumn/Winter 2010

 Mary Katrantzou Autumn/Winter 2010

Mary Katrantzou created quite a stir with her perfume bottle collection last spring ‘09  however, as much as we like her novelty , we also know that highly graphic clothing runs the risk of looking repetitive and of course getting knocked off . Sara Mower said it best: ” Her problem, rightly anticipated, is that novelty quickly becomes cliché—and a cheap T-shirt dress on a market stall. To keep things interesting, Katrantzou knows she has to do something more sophisticated than a placement print on a shift dress.”  As much as we can see the  risk  she runs into with her collection, we hope this is will not be a precursor to its end…Imgs via vogue.es.

V Magazine Issue No. 64: ‘Push It Real Good’

VMagPushIt1 V Magazine Issue No. 64: Push It Real Good

My partner is kind of vexed by this V Magazine photo shoot because she says it drains all the edge out of the duo, Salt ‘n’ Pepa, who insipred it. I agree, but then again that’s what fashion (and film and literature, etc) always do.  About five to ten years after the fact, they land on a movement that was raw and a little scary/alienating to the masses and redo it in a way that’s safer and more pallatable. And depending on where you’re coming from, the modernized version seems anything from annoying to amazing. I personally feel these two groundbreaking females have already been reinterpreted to death, but I’m U.S. based. There still might be some fascination for this European-based mag. The photographer for this shoot is Josh Olins and it was styled by Clare Richardson.

Gucci Fall 2010

 Gucci Fall 2010

There are two faces to Gucci, the Northern-influenced side, which is classic and quietly rich, and the Southern side, which is flashier and more ostentatious. The fall 2010 collection, probably influenced by the shakey economy, is definitely leaning toward its Northern roots. That is a bummer for me because I like when my labels flaunt themselves with not an ounce of shame. Not that Gucci has completely vanquished its flashy looks to the storage bins. You can still buy the iconic red and green stripe and interlocking Gs in spades on the website (which probably outsells the logo-less items 100-1).

Kelis Performing New Single “Acapella”

KelisEveNightClub3 Kelis Performing New Single Acapella

Kelis recently performed her new single, “Acapella,” at Eve Nightclub in Las Vegas. This outfit will not likely cause as much of an uproar as her recent “Avatar”-inspired get-up. Though I have to say, some of the responses to that look were immensely entertaining, including the comments ripping a New York magazine writer to shreds for stating: “You are not Lady Gaga, and this attempt at avant-garde fashion doesn’t compare to her get-ups.” As ClutchMagazine blogger wrote, “Kelis did “edge” and “avant garde” before most of us knew what these forms were. It’s authenticity translated so sincerely because Kelis has never really been a manufactured project.” Can we get an amen!

More WireImages of Kelis sporting a bodysuit with Louboutins, plus DJ Rashida after the flip.
