Marc Jacobs Fall 2010: Long Dresses

Marc Jacobs Fall 2010: Long Dresses

Next in line after the fur bags were the long dresses, detailed with fur collars. The fabric and cut of the dress are very casual and easy but with the fur, oh so chic. Overall the collection was very calm. You can see Marc is in a happy place in his life, which is nice to see. Style quotes him as saying about the collection, “There’s so much striving for newness now that newness feels less new,” which, fair enough…sometimes it’s time to take a breather and refine rather than always reaching for the next summit. Still, one has to wonder if all the chat about Alexanger Wang being the “new” Marc doesn’t light some sort of fire under his behind. In any competetive field, after all, you never want to feel too safe.

Marc Jacobs Fall 2010: the Bags!

Marc Jacobs Fall 2010: the Bags!

For Marc Jacobs’ Fall 2010 NY Fashion Week show yesterday the bags were my easy favorite. While high-end labels are getting murdered by fast-fashion knock-offs, savvy designers like Marc know bags and shoes are the last refuge for statement pieces. That being said, I wish designers would be smarter about when they release images of collections to the world. Over the years of doing this blog, we’ve watched much lower budget labels refine how and when they release images to blogs like ours. The best ones aren’t letting us post up images five-to-six months in advance of their retail launch. It frustrates consumers and it gives the copiers too much time.  So while it’s great that fashion is trying to be more democratic, these big-name labels really need to wise-up on how they market. Why not show the fall lines in February just to buyers, but reserve marketing to media outlets later in spring? And I know change is hard, but come on, this is dollars we’re talking about.

Y-3 Fall 2010

 Y 3 Fall 2010

There’s lots of discussion out there about designers making their runway shows more democratic by live-streaming them, but at least until the technology improves, aint no way that is replacing actually being there. Case in point Y-3. In reading the reviews on Style, I discover that Yohji was clearly dealing with some anger management issues when he designed this collection because it included tee-shirts which read, “33 Years in Prison” and “23 Years in Prison – 20 = Y-3,” none of which are captured in the photos. And at the end of the show, which was backdropped by Paul Simon’s “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover,” Yohji punches a male boxer and then is himself punched out by a woman! Anway, I like this collection because it reminds me of my partner, Samia, all snuggy and layered up….stuff you can hide from the world in if you are so inclined.

Alexander Wang Fall 2010

 Alexander Wang Fall 2010

After the runway show video linked to here, there’s an interview with Alex, in which he discusses his inspiration for his Fall 2010 collection. Until now, he’s been chummiest with the Downtownista, but this time around he pushed her in a more mature direction by fusing her sensibilities with the ultimate ’90s powerbroker, the Wallstreet business lady. Much more secure in her role than she was even ten years ago, today’s business women no longer feels required to mascarade in the female version of a man’s suit. So perhaps it is apropos for fashion to take apart and rebuild the look. Given the inspiration, it’s not suprising that the pinstripe looks are the strongest.  I’m not so sure about other parts of the show. It’ll be interesting to see how it plays out in fashion editorals.
