 Shakira What Happened???

Lois and I have been  observing the transformation of singer Shakira who made her fame as an edgy “Rock en Espanol” sensation. I can’t say that her switching to  english has killed her edge but the  mainstream-ness of her look in recent appearances: Straight blond hair, little dress and heels has us a little worried. While we  understand transformation, and reinvention of style, looking more glamourous  in these parts we truly believe in the need for individual expression in fashion. Especially for performers who often end up looking like carbon copies of each other. While for the most part she does not look bad ,  what happens when you  totally shed what made you special and unique ?  More images on the flip via wire.

I agree completely I was really feeling her style until recently, maybe since that duet with Beyonce i have been watching her conform and I ‘m not to happy to see her switch gears, I understand the politics behind but it makes me sad :(

  2. As much as I’m not a fan of the direction of this transformation, I don’t think it’s that bad. Yes, she has come a LONG way since the thicker, Pies Descalzos days, but at least she owns up that she’s going the pop route and is the same personality underneath. The new wardrobe choices also match her music as her latest releases aren’t as rock or earthy as before.

  3. I agree. At times she looks like Beyonce from a distance with the hair and outfits. I personally do not like her transformation. She has conformed to the norm in the business.

  4. WELLNESS:

I think it’s hypocritical of this site to oppose Shakira’s “transformation” while constantly promoting that of Rihanna’s. Her change in looks is nothing compared to Rihanna’s and coincidentally hers is just as unoriginal. If you take a look at how Rihanna used to carry herself she was a simple, island girl in baggy jeans and converse and weave with a pon de replay colorful cheap bangles type of chick. It honestly bothers me to open up a Harper’s Bazaar and see her now, in Balmain and Dior and to honestly believe that she’s supposed to be setting trends and “taking risks”. She too, is a product of the mainstream culture, others have been trying too.. Beyonce, in Balmain and Gareth Pugh? Ha, I remember when she was wearing her mothers outfits. Sorry, but this post is too biased for me especially coming from writers who believe Rihanna is fashions sovereign. I’m good.

  5. @ Wellness Keep in mind that our observation of Shakira is made in comparison the career she already had as a Rock en espanol sensation who made her fame wearing colorful extensions , torn denim, often barefoot. Her look stood out in the music scene.

Rihanna on the other hand is still at the very beginning of her career. If Blake Lively can be chosen by Vogue as one of the ten best dressed women why not Rihanna who , when it comes to wearing edgy fashion has made her mark .

As far as we know style is a constant evolution, the best fashion icons , can look back on their past fashion choices and wonder ” what was I thinking?”

Fashion from what we believe is personal and open to interpretation. Therefore we do not aim to make Rihanna converts out of anyone . In a sea of little dresses and heels its nice to see a few celebrities doing something a little edgier. And we never said she was the edgiest…Between Karen O, Grace Jones to name a few there are some serious heavy hitters in that category.

As for Beyonce”s entry into the edgy world, the JC report had a nice feature on it.link here:

At the end of the day that is the beauty of fashion! The freedom of expression it provides. we thankfully live in a free world where each one is entitled to their opinion. We loved that you took the time to share yours, That Rocks !

Ummm, has she really transformed? Just a small observation here, but all the so called “transformation” pictures are on a red carpet, you cant honestly expect her to show up in a denim mini and lace up jacket to a dressy occasion?!? Just thought I would add my two sense!
