Popomomo x The Source Family Collaboration Tees

aquarius Popomomo x The Source Family Collaboration Tees

Taking the spirit of collaboration apparel further than it has, Liz Wasserman of  Popomomo  teamed up with Isis Aquarian, Source member and author of the book, The Source, to create a limited run of hand-dyed unisex T-shirts inspired by Aquarian’s memories. “I was focused on the idea of aesthetic utopias, and really got inspired by The Source,” said Wasserman. “They were so specifically true to their time and place, and in search of something transcendent.”

The Source Family Cult was a hippie-centric commune family that made their name in Los Angeles during the 1970s from scandal and, of course, style. Founder Jim Baker, was a restaurateur who owned and operated the popular Sunset diner and was accused of bank robbery and murder. His women wore long gowns, kept their hair long, meditated in their Griffith Park mansion, drove around in a Rolls Royce and were part of a rock band called Yo Ha Wha 13; sparking much interest and urban legends surrounding their lifestyle and dealings.

Their restaurant is the setting of the breakup scene in Annie Hall, and was frequented by the Hollywood Hippie Glitterati. Isis’ book was featured in the New York Times T Magazine, and the Yahowha band has been cited as a frequent inspiration for bands, especially freak folkers such as Devendra Banhart and The Espers. Yahowah 13, the Source’s band, is starting their new East Coast tour March 25th in Philadelphia.

Through email and phone conversations, Isis answered questions about her feelings, thoughts, and ideas during that time, and popomomo designer Lizz Wasserman created hand drawings inspired by her stories.  More styles available at ShopFlick.
