Why Anna Wintour Sux by Cathy Horyn

07 January 2009, 20.58 | Posted in Uncategorized | No comments »

New York Times’ Cathy Horyn’s bread and butter has always been her willingness to go there when it comes to critiquing the fashion industry. It wouldn’t be THAT big of a deal except of course that we’re talking about fashion, which is notoriously all kissy-kissy to your face, but the meanest industry in all the land the very second you turn your back. So I guess I shouldn’t be shocked that Cathy did (a long overdue) scathing attack of Vogue, except that it IS Vogue for crissakes and at one point she is gonna have to face La Diabla herself, Anna Wintour, who everyone knows still wears fur cuz it’s great for concealing various and sundry razor blades and extra long knives.

Here’s one juicy excerpt (from an article that ran on New Year’s Eve–way to bury the story, oh-great-ballsy editors of the Times!):

No one at Vogue, least of all its editor in chief, Anna Wintour, could have been seriously stung by a recent letter from a reader complaining that the magazine was in a rut. After all, Ms. Wintour chose to publish the letter, which chided the magazine for featuring the same women — “Gwyneth Paltrow, Caroline Trentini, Gisele Bündchen, Nicole Kidman, Sienna Miller, blah, blah, blah,” as the reader, Kathryn Williams of San Diego, said. “I could make a calendar of your cover girls, and it would probably repeat year after year.” She added: “Let’s face it: Vogue is getting a bit stale. It is a pity, too — because the magazine is still much better than the others."

Hat tip: NY Magazine, which, what the heck happened over there? Suddenly they’re posting more than twice a week and the tone is, ummm, I don’t a tad more fashion-industry-esque?

Kayu Bamboo Sunglasses

Spotted these Kayu bamboo shades on Treehugger just now. They’re cute, plus the materials are more eco-friendly than plastic. For added do-gooder points, the company also donates some of its earnings to an organization that is working to eliminate preventable blindness.

Pixie Market: Tribal Skirt

Looking at the backend of this blog, I see Samia is working on posting something with the word "Sahara" in the title. So let’s see how long we can’t keep this coincidental tribe theme going. Cause I swear on a stack of sacred animal Gods that I didn’t notice the name of this skirt I spotted on PixieMarket until after I decided to do a post on it.

Himba Women: Roots Accessories

07 January 2009, 19.07 | Posted in Accessories, Other | No comments »

In these slow, post-X-mas fashion days, there’s time for me to obsess on other things besides the latest and greatest Western designs. Watching a National Geographic show on various and sundry tribes, I got hooked last week on the Himba tribe, especially the women, who are known for their striking looks and beauty regime, which includes twice-daily application of a red ochre mixed with butter fat. Their jewerly, to put it mildly, is off the hinges:

One of the reason that the Himba and other tribes fascinate me is seeing what we share and are divergent on behaviorally. As for marriage, husbands are chosen for Himba women, but the catch is that they’re encouraged to have one or two boyfriends on the side. Nice! This site here has more info, images and even video if you find yourself as hypnotized as I was by their whole vibe.

Sally Hansen Nail Art Pens

06 January 2009, 19.11 | Posted in Accessories, Art, Other | 6 comments »

I spotted this Sally Hansen nail art pens (strangely not yet on the website) ad in Glamour yesterday. Nail art is one of my biggest obsessions so I would love to believe that I could create the art used in the illustration, but I know better. And I say that as someone who can do a pretty perfect manicure. Still, they might be worth a try just ‘cuz dealing with the language barrier at most nail salons is quite the difficult mountain to climb when it comes to collaborating on designs that are even slightly off the beaten path.

^^See the little pens there in the lower left. That’s what they look like. The catch is that they’re water-based so while you can remove mistakes, they have to be set with a final coat or you’ll have a big sloppy, mess on your hands.

Gwendolyn Huskens ,A Name to Remember

huskens001 Gwendolyn Huskens ,A Name to Remember

When I find women footwear designers, I really do jump for joy  cause let’s face it  there are not that many… with a true innovation!

"Gwendolyn Huskens is a designer studying at the design academy in eindhoven, in the department of man and identity. At the recent graduation show, she presented a set of six shoes called ‘medic esthetic’. Aiming to reveal the taboos associated with physical deformities, her collection of cream and skin-toned footwear for women is made from medical materials and supplies such as plaster bandages, steel and band-aids. The result is a line of functional and oddly stylish shoes. "

And we love that!!

Et Tu Chanel?: Big Layoffs Coming!!

06 January 2009, 15.42 | Posted in Uncategorized | No comments »

I know we’re in a worldwide recession, but I was still sort of stunned to read yesterday (Hahaha–how mad is WWD that it got scooped by the NY Times on this story??) that Chanel has plans to layoff 200 workers. There’s so much fantasy and aura that surrounds Coco & Co. that in my mind it’s akin to the North Pole and Santa’s Workshop. I mean cheez, is Old Saint Nich gonna announce elf layoffs next???

chanel bags2web 0 Et Tu Chanel?: Big Layoffs Coming!!

The articles money quote (which was pulled from a WWD article)? When Karl denies reality by stating: “Today, everyone can say that something is for financial reasons when they want. For me, artistic reasons are more important.” Okaaaaay, hun, keep living in that dream world (and I mean that sincerely!)
